This is the most obnoxious display of Obama worship I think I have ever seen from anyone in the media to date. From Newsbusters:
“Nightline” co-anchor Terry Moran gave an interview on Friday to the Media Bistro’s “Morning Media Menu” podcast and compared Barack Obama to George Washington. Talking to host and editor Steve Krakauer, Moran gushed, “I like to say that, in some ways, Barack Obama is the first President since George Washington to be taking a step down into the Oval Office.” (For those who have forgotten, George Washington defeated the strongest military power in the world. Barack Obama was a community organizer.) [Full interview audio available here.]
Moran continued, “I mean, from visionary leader of a giant movement, now he’s got an executive position that he has to perform in, in a way.” [MP3 audio of just this answer, 26 seconds]
The comparison of Barack Obama and George Washington is an insult to Washington, who was a humble man. More from David Boaz at The Cato Institute:
George Washington was the man who established the American republic. He led the revolutionary army against the British Empire, he served as the first president, and most importantly he stepped down from power.
In an era of brilliant men, Washington was not the deepest thinker. He never wrote a book or even a long essay, unlike George Mason, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Adams. But Washington made the ideas of the American founding real. He incarnated liberal and republican ideas in his own person, and he gave them effect through the Revolution, the Constitution, his successful presidency, and his departure from office…
Give the last word to Washington’s great adversary, King George III. The king asked his American painter, Benjamin West, what Washington would do after winning independence. West replied, “They say he will return to his farm.”
“If he does that,” the incredulous monarch said, “he will be the greatest man in the world.”
Barack Obama is no George Washington and Terry Moran’s attempt to compare the two men only makes him look ridiculous.
