Yesterday, on the radio, I heard the reports of the swearing-in of Alberto Gonzales as the United States Attorney General. In his praise for Mr. Gonzales, though, Bush dropped a whopper.
He described Mr. Gonzales as “a son of humble Texas.”
I’ve known a few Texans. Hell, my best friend married a Texan. You can call them many things, but I’ve yet to meet — or even hear of — a “humble” Texan. It’s a completely foreign concept to them.
I call for an immediate investigation and possible impeachment.

It’s true! Not even the residents of Humble, Texas are humble! Obviously this rises to the level of an impeachable offense!
There’s a good possibility you could read more about it in the Humble Observer.

You call it “swagger,” we call it “walkin’.” You call it “overbearing arrogance,” we call it “humble.” It’s all a matter of perspective.
WE ARE SO HUMBLE! WE hardly ever talk about how we live in the greatest state in the U.S. or how everything is better here. Hardly ever!
So Really!!! We are practically modest….;-)
Residents of Humble, TX are so proud that they choose to pronounce the name of their city ‘uhm-ble’ just so everyone knows they are much superior to the other cities named ‘hum-ble’.
Of course they leave the H off of Houston too.
Far be it from me to argue with that, partner…

You said a mouthful there. I lived in Texas for three years. “Humble” has been stricken from every school dictionary there.
Ho, Hum…..
The usual grumbles of envy from one of the denizens of the lesser states. >D
Humble Texan = oxymoron… Not such animal.
Maybe he meant that Gonzales is from Humble, Texas. There is, in fact, such a place. And it does, in fact, live down to its name.
It’s all relative. It’s kind of like saying “Conservative” about someone from Massachusetts – it’s all about the distance from your starting point. There are Texans who are humble in comparison to, say, Ross Perot or Red Adair. In comparison to, say, non-Texans we may appear like arrogant and overbearing cowboys, but that’s just because y’all are jealous.
– J.R is jess a grinin’ and lovin it….
Jay,
This is just pure slander against Texans! We Texans are more humble then even Mother Teresa.
rightwingsparkle, yea, you’re humble 😉
There’s no reason for Texans to be humble, frankly, but most of them are. Not in that fake-superior way, but real, actual humility that springs from necessity. I used to tell people in Berkeley, CA, that despite what they had heard, Texans are generally polite and humble to a fault, and that’s how we all get along. Otherwise, the rednecks and the freaks wouldn’t mix very well. A little yes sir, no sir, thank you ma’am keeps everyone happy and allows for extremities of appearance and behavior to coexist happily.
Now, when we leave Texas . . . that’s another thing I suppose. But:

Oh Lord, it’s hard to be humble
When you’re perfect in every way.
I can’t wait to look in the mirror
‘Cause I get better lookin’ each day
To know me is to love me
I must be a hell of a man!
Oh Lord, it’s hard to be humble
But I’m doin’ the best that I can.
Healthy pride is that for which there is much to be proud. Such is the pride of Texans. “It’s a whole ‘nother country,” don’t you know!
