You should know Grover Norquist, he’s the head of Americans for Tax Reform and hauls out his “no new taxes” pledge every election. There’s trouble in River City for any Republican candidate who won’t sign it. That’s trouble, it starts with “T” and it stands for TAXES!
Who is Grover Norquist, and what is the Republican Leadership doing that is garnering his support?
We all know about his work on tax issues and I’m not going to address that today. What I do want to address is his positions on a couple of other issues that are near and dear to my heart on which Grover is very outspoken.
Grover Norquist is in John McCain’s hip pocket on immigration reform. He’s pro-amnesty down to the soles of his shoes. Here’s what he had to say about the bill that the Gang of Eight pushed through the Senate.
Today, some 11 million “undocumented workers” live in the shadows in the United States. Sixty percent of them crossed the Mexican border or the Canadian border without government approval and 40% arrived by plane and overstayed their visas.
The 844-page immigration reform bill submitted to the Senate by the “Gang of Eight” senators would allow the 11 million to earn legal status by submitting to a background check to weed out those with felony convictions, paying taxes and a fine. They would then be Registered Provisional Immigrants (RPI), allowing them to work anywhere in the United States, denied means-tested federal welfare benefits for 10 years, and only after the 10 years become eligible for the 3-5 year process of becoming citizens.
This legislation would greatly strengthen the American economy. When a similar immigration reform measure passed in 1986, those immigrants granted legal status saw their incomes rise by 15% simply because they could move around, hold a driver’s license, and interview for work without fear. Their legal status made more employers willing to hire them.
And just so you understand that Grover’s no newbie to amnesty, here’s what he had to say about the ill-fated amnesty bill back in 2007.
Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist today praised the U.S. Senate for passing S. 2612, the “Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2006.” He urged the House to follow suit by quickly convening a conference committee and getting immigration reform done this year.
S. 2612 would address all three areas of comprehensive immigration reform. The border would be secured through measures that most Americans support. A temporary worker program would be established to give work visas for those who need them. Finally, the 12 million illegal workers who are here today would pay their debt to society to earn legal status.
That was horse hockey in 2007 and it’s horse hockey today. Read the links above and you’ll understand that Grover Norquist, along with the entire Gang of Eight and their supporters are lying through their teeth.
The second issue with Norquist is that he’s a vile anti-Semite. This came to a head last year at CPAC where he was featured. To their eternal shame CPAC supported Norquist and declared persona non grata anyone who opposes his anti-Semitism. Norquist is the head of the Islamic Institute. Who are they? Here they are courtesy of Debbie Schussel a long time conservative activist who was barred from CPAC.
Norquist, a founder and board member of the Islamic Institute (which operated out of his offices), was on the take from Gulf state emirates and laundered money for his buddy Jack Abramoff. At Islamic Institute (which operated out of Abramoff’s Americans for Tax Reform offices), he employed Khalid Saffuri, an admitted funder of “the martyrs”–he adopted HAMAS homicide bombers’ families and funded them. And Norquist and Islamic Institute accepted cash from several “charities” which laundered money for the Saudi government to Al-Qaeda.
Now that you’ve got an idea who “Mr. Conservative” is, let me note that he’s supporting the Republican Leadership this summer in their quest to avoid defunding ObamaCare. Two Republican lobbying organizations, the Club for Growth and Heritage Action for America, are working tirelessly to defund ObamaCare in the continuing resolution being put together in the Republican controlled House. Here’s the story from Roll Call.
A House GOP leadership team whose best-laid plans have been continually torpedoed by Heritage Action for America and the Club for Growth has a familiar ally as it tries to avert a government shutdown: Grover Norquist.
It’s not hard to find frustration with Heritage Action and the Club for Growth among senior Republicans, who believe the groups’ demand that they include Obamacare defunding language on any spending bill keeping the government open will ultimately empower Democrats in a series of fall battles over spending. They believe it’s part of a pattern of pushing untenable demands that have no chance of becoming law.
“Heritage Action and Club for Growth are slowly becoming irrelevant Neanderthals,” one senior GOP aide said.
Personally, I think the irrelevant Neanderthals are the Republican Leadership. Call your House Member today and tell him or her to insist that ObamaCare defunding is part of the continuing resolution.
Let’s make “ObamaCare!” into “ObamaCared?”
