Veena Malik – You Go Girl!

Veena Malik is a beautiful, talented, and tough-skinned Pakistani actress.  Last year, she appeared on “Bigg Boss”, the Indian version of Big Brother.  As part of the show (“reality TV” is of course heavily scripted) Malik played into a romantic situation with Indian actor Ashmit Patel.  This stirred up quite a controversy, partly because Malik, a Pakistani, was working in India,  and also because her appearance and romantic dalliance on a secular show was considered by fundamentalist Muslims to be disgraceful.

Last January, Malik was invited by Kamran Shahid to be a guest on his popular talk show.  Shahid confronted Malik with charges that she had brought shame to Pakistan, and then turned the show over to Mufti Abdul Qavi, who attempted to further shame Malik by stating, “No one in Pakistan can look at her pictures in the presence of their daughters.”

Sure, the whole thing was probably a setup, but Veena Malik’s fiery response to Mufti Qavi simply has to be seen to be believed.  Seriously — she  Hands.  Him.  His.  Ass.  On.  A.  Plate.  With a heapin’ helping of whoop-ass on the side.  MEMRI-TV recently uploaded a video of the episode, with English translations:

Fundamentalists of any stripe always have difficulty facing the fact that they have been bested by someone they consider to be inferior.  I’m sure the pain is twice as intense when the besting is done by turning their own fundamentalist rules around against them, which Malik does brilliantly.  (Alinsky’s Tactic #4Make the enemy live up to their own book of rules.)

The fact that Veena Malik is still alive two months after such a fierce attack on a respected Muslim cleric is noteworthy in itself, but of course it does not imply that she is out of danger.

The only way fundamentalist Islam will be subdued is if its practitioners become shamed in the eyes of the public.  It is a slow and difficult method of achieving victory, but it is probably the only method that will truly be effective.  Bravo to Veena Malik for doing her part to steer her people in the right direction.
