The Wizbang poll tracking tool was, I think, a pretty fair success. But now election day is upon us. Assuming a clean, decisive election, when it is all over, I’m going to put the final tally up and leave that for up for a week so everyone has time to delete the script without getting any errors.
But what to do on election day?
I can just leave the polls up there OR maybe we can use it for something cool.
I am considering, after the polls close, replacing the various predictions with all the networks and have the running tally from the networks, but I think that is a waste because we will all have the TV on. (Besides, I plan on being good and drunk by about 9pm eastern. So I’ll be in no condition or mood to update it.)
Anyway, if someone (especially those of you who put it on your site) can come up with something cool they would like to see it used for, perhaps Kevin and I can do it. If not maybe I’ll let it die an ignominious death.
Any bright ideas?
If the election is contested, I’ve thought about using it as a “newswire” type thing but let’s not go there just yet.
The basic rules are we have 400 pixels by (let’s say) 2 column inches to work with.
Turn the boxes into a trail of geese. You know, like the carnival shooting galleries…animated geese moving across the boxes. Problem is, which direction? Left to right or righ to left? You could even assign a sound file to one when you place your cursor over it, like, oh, “blam!”
“because we will all have the TV on. (Besides, I plan on being good and drunk by about 9pm eastern.”
Damn – I live in the Midwest and only plan on getting to the bar to watch the returns at 7 central – I guess I will have to drink fast to get caught up with eastern time 😉
Not like I have never done that before – or still hear the stories about it, but I don’t want to be the lone raving conserative drunk in the bar – but that could work, as long as everything goes to plan. Nothing better than bieng the drunken “I told you so”. But here it won’t be so much about Bush and Kerry but when Thune beats Daschle.
Next comment may be from the hosptial, but sometimes, you need to stand up and call bullshit.
I don’t think there will be anything worth putting on there besides a riot count, and possibly a damage estimate.
Use it as a report card for the polls – how far off reality were they? Show their final results compared to the actual voting.
um, what about an election night beer tally?
Tony I only have 400 pixels
Paul and Kevin,
I have developed a live election results page for all those interested in seeing the State-by-State results in one easy to see place.

You’re right that most will have the TV on, but it is always nice to have one convenient place to see the tallies as they’re updated. Let me know what you think.
A running tally of genuinely disenfranchised voters.

Er, okay — maybe not.
Joe I like it… Just a suggestion, you should put a refresh every 2 minutes in the page so people can just leave it open and get new data.
It was a great idea when you had it… add my idea and it is off the hook.
PLUS your site meter will go wild!
P
In fact, I can promise you if you auto refresh, I’ll keep it open all night. – Well if I’m sober.
McGehee you crack me up
I am going to add the refresh tonight! Thanks Paul. I’m not sure I have the traffic to make the Site Meter hum, but I think the few that get a chance to see it will like it, I hope.
I suppose porn is out of the question.
I don’t think you need all THAT many pixels for a beer tally… in fact, the same setup would work, with a column for you, one for Kevin and another for Jay Tea, first to 270 beers is the winner, of course!
And since its almost election day in 3 of the 4 main time zones, I’d just like to kiss a little ass and say thanks for all three of your efforts through this campaign season, its really been appreciated!
thanks Tony
I guess from the comments, I’ll just put up the final numbers and let it die an ignominious death.
Paul: It’s been a really nice running tally display, so, again, I thank you for authoring it and making it available as is.
It MIGHT/WOULD be helpful to see a permutation post-Election night as to which states were “most” contested or something like that…where there were the worst cases of voter irregularity, in some context…dunno. Shame to see it disappear after tonight/tomorrow, since it’s such a handy informational bar.
400 pixels. Let’s see…no (new) ideas after a pause here, sorry.
