Here’s one of my choices Gross Pointe Blank.
The album features great songs from the likes of: The Violent Femmes, The Clash, The English Beat, David Bowie/Queen, Faith No More, The Specials, The Jam, and Pete Townshend. It’s a time capsule of good 80’s music.
What’s your’s and why?

Vision of Escaflowne, all 4 soundtracks: Over the Sky, OST2, OST3, lovers only. They’re what started me down the road to collect Japanese anime soundtracks.
Another good one is Jin-Roh. Soundtrack is appropriately depressing in this retelling of Little Red Riding Hood.
Pearl Jam – Ten
One of the greatest live bands and one of the greatest albums ever.
The Blues Brothers. A good roundup of excellent blues figures and the Belushi-Ackroyd combo.
Amen. Grosse Point Blank is great. Unfortunately, I sold what I thought was the DVD on ebay and ended up shipping the soundtrack.
Blast!
I hate to say this – but the soundtrack from Manhunter used to be a favorite of mine.
Singles. Got your Pearl Jam, your Mudhoney, your Alice In Chains, your Mother Love Bone, your Soundgarden…awww yeah.
And Spinal Tap, just because I love Tap.
The sound track for “Heavy Metal” because, well it was Heavy Metal.
Dave
Woodstock, The Graduate, Highlander, A Mighty Wind
Diner’s soundtrack was great. Wonderful 60s songs you had rarely or never heard before. Actually, I’m not sure they ever released a soundtrack album, but the songs during the movie were great.

I’m torn. Either The Lost Boys or Say Anything – both have some simply fabulous songs, and really set the mood for two of my favorite movies.
24 Hour Party People: great intro to Joy Division, New Order, and the rest of the Factory catalog. Goes great with Willie’s Honeysuckle Rose
Urgh: A Music War: The “soundtrack” to a concert film, but still one of the best compilations ever put together.
Two Stingky soundtracks: one that reigns o’er me and one that’s mostly just curious
Here’s a great soundtrack from a movie I’ve never even heard of: Until the End of the World
And of course you have to have this
i’m just waiting for someone to mention Saturday Night Fever.
La Bamba!
songs from richie valens…buddy holly, the big bopper, and others, great fun.
Or
Star Wars….let me change that to any John Williams movie…

The Commitments. The director found musicians who could act, not the other way ’round, and created a wonderful band-that-almost-made-it story.
Don’t forget the second disc, either.
Um, like, I graduated in, like, ’83, so the most bitchin’ soundtrack is, of course, like Valley Girl. Or Flashdance.
Oh.my.GAWD!
Sounds of the 70’s by Realistic
Damn I miss the lights, the action, the Travolta. We need disco in times of war, the times that try men’s souls.
Two entries for me. For incidental music, Vangelis was a genius writing the music for Blade Runner. If you’re talking about a movie soundtrack that just has good songs, Valley Girl (good choice ginabina). Yeah, it’s a cheezy movie, but what other movie has the Plimsouls, The Psychedelic Furs, and Modern English?
What does it matter? All this jungle music will be banned under Aschcroft II.
There are two I cannot recall right now (know the music, not the soundtrack name) but I would put Gladiator and Lord of the Rings in my top four.
I loved the soundtrack to two Quinten [sic] Tarantino movies — “Jackie Brown” (my favorite next to “Resevoir Dogs) and “Pulp Fiction.” Really feelgood soundtracks.
(blush)
Footloose.
Hanging my head in shame,
J.
I liked the second Valley Girl soundtrack, although it’s more like a quarantine section for bad ’80s pop instead of a time capsule.
Sparks! Woo-hooo!
“Maximum Overdrive”
All AC/DC, all the time.
No question.
That is all.
I hate to be an old fuddy-duddy, but did anybody out there ever hear of a guy named Beethoven or of another guy named Mozart?
The soundtrack to Highlander (also known as the Queen album A Kind of Magic) was quite good. But my all-time favorite soundtrack is still from the world’s greatest date movie ever:
So I Married An Axe Murderer
Also, the soundtrack from Star Trek 6 is pretty good, as is the soundtrack from a small film called All Of Me.
“Maximum Overdrive” was good, I agree.
“Forrest Gump” soundtrack was good, too.
Also, I like the Soundtrack to “Boogie Nights.”
OH Come on people! I can’t believe that nobody said “The Big Chill.” Another great one but a bit more obscure is “The Four Heartbeats” (Robert Townsend movie.) And the original Star Wars soundtrack is a great even without the movie getting stuck in your head.
To be a little more recent, the American Pie 1 & 2 movies have great soundtracks complete with songs from more modern bands.
MI-2 for harder rock fans is awesome.
And for older songs the soundtrack to Almost Famous is very good.
the bowie/queen song “pressure” that is on the GPB soundtrack is timeless, I see the producers of the new tv show “rescue” think so as well.
American Hot Wax
Singles, Judgement Night, Can’t Hardly Wait (hey, it’s named after, and has one of my favorite Replacements songs on it)
The Commitments of course. Friend was in it (bit part) and another tried out for the guitarist part.
BTW, that singer? Not dubbed. And he was 16 when the movie was made.
I’m surprised that no one has mentioned “Fast Times at Ridgemont High”. Led Zeppelin, The Cars…
Getting the Violent Femmes to record an “orchestrated” version of “Blister in the Sun” was worth the price of the CD alone!
Paris Texas
I’d say “The Commitments,” with honorable mention to “Saturday Night Fever.”
The Big Chill
Fast Times At Ridgemont High – could you ever listen to The Cars’ Moving In Stereo without seeing Phoebe Cates in their head??
best one of all has to be – Singles…. totally captured what was going on in Seattle at the time, and the movie came out when it was still fresh….
Wayne’s World is a classic.
Magnolia had a phenomenal soundtrack–the director made the film based in part on Aimee Mann’s songs–but it was ruined by the addition of two Supertramp songs at the end.
Either the Halo for X-Box OST or the Pirates of the Caribbean.
“Bladerunner” if only for “End Title Reprise”
Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, the redone version where Giogio Moroder put it to music. Songs from Jon Anderson, Freddie Mercury, Adam Ant, and others all espcially written for the movie. Awesome soundtrack.
The Big Chill gets my first vote but I also liked Chicago. Razzle-dazzle ’em has to be a classic. Used to tell this to one of my shy kids to help him overcome it and it really seemed to help but just like the sound and really like show tunes.
Two awful films with good soundtracks:
“A Life Less Ordinary” and “The Saint.”
I haven’t seen “Garden State” yet but my wife liked it and I like the s/t.
I second the GPB soundtracks 1 and 2, as well as the nods to the Pie films.
“You’re a handsome devil. What’s your name?”
🙂
I can’t believe someone did not mention Say Anything. That soundtrack is awesome with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fishbone, Depeche Mode, Peter Gabriel, Cameron Crowe’s wife, etc. I owned that soundtrack three times in high school and college because people kept stealing it from me. Truly good stuff!
Hey goodsnake, I did, earlier. That and Lost Boys. 😉
I, too, put in a vote for SINGLES. It really captured the “Seattle sound” well.
Last of the Mohicans is an awesome, POWERFUL soundtrack! Their politics aside, the movie was magnificent as well. BTW, lehi, what song(s) did Ashcroft ‘ban’? What’s that? Umm, no.
Rock N Roll High School (How the hell could I have forgotten that one?!?)
