Tomorrow is the “birthday” of DNS. Wired has a little history in an article here. One quibble with the article – There are more than 13 root servers (he incorrectly cites 12). There are only 13 IP addresses, but the guy who was quoted is a moron if he actually believes that there are only 13 boxes. Ever hear of a load balancer or a virtual IP address? Most of the root server operators are running multiple clusters of machines that respond to queries for their root server.
