In-N-Out Burger defies easy explanation. It is a fast food chain that does one thing, burgers, but does then exceptionally well. My company is headquartered in Mt. View and every time we are out all the engineers want to eat at I-N-Out. Even the international guys can’t wait to slam a burger down their gullet.
In-N-Out History: In 1948, the first In-N-Out Burger was founded by Harry and Esther Snyder in Baldwin Park. Harry’s idea of a drive-thru hamburger stand where customers could order through a two-way speaker box was quite unique. In that era, it was common to see carhops serving those who wanted to order food from their car. Harry’s idea caught on and California’s first drive-thru hamburger stand was born.
The Snyder’s business philosophy was simple: “Give customers the freshest, highest quality foods you can buy and provide them with friendly service in a sparkling clean environment.” These principles have worked so well over the years that they are still the company’s fundamental philosophy.
Quality, freshness, and service were very important to Harry and Esther. Their sons, Guy and Rich, learned the business from the “ground floor”. From an early age, Guy and Rich worked at In-N-Out, learning the principles that were to become the cornerstones of In-N-Out’s philosophy.
There are 4 major items on the menu: burgers, fries, sodas, shakes. In all the varieties the menu totals less that 20 lines or so. Imagine my surprise when surfing around and I find details of a “secret” of menu items that they will make for you. This guy confirms with the company that the items are indeed available, and shows a receipt for purchase of one of the special items.
For all I know everyone else on Earth knows this already, but then again maybe they don’t. If you are lucky enough to live in CA, AZ, or NV and be near an I-N-Out, you must give it a try.
High school trivia for Southern Californians: Anyone remember the bumper stickers? The had the lettering that looked like this:
*** Subtract two letters with an exacto knife and you’ve got hilarity for teenagers.
Side Note: For those of you in the metro DC area, try Five Guys Burgers And Fries. It’s even better than I-N-Out. If you want to give a shout out to a similarly good chain in your town, plead do so. Remember no HTML formatting in the comment – only the URL box hyperlinks
Update: I forgot all about the Bigest Loser In The Blogosphere contest. Divert your eyes!!! But if you haven’t started yet In-N-Out is a good candidate for your “last supper”.
