From FOX News:
Republicans have decided they’re not going to give a rebuttal to President Obama’s jobs speech later this week, a decision House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi took as a high affront to the White House.
Suppose that the roles were reversed. Suppose that a Republican president were to give a speech, and that the Democrats were not going to give a rebuttal speech. If that scenario were to take place, and if a Republican official were to protest the lack of a rebuttal speech, then I would seriously question the sanity of that Republican official.
When one gives a rebuttal speech, one contradicts or criticizes what was said in an earlier speech. By declining to give a rebuttal speech in response to the President’s speech, the Republicans are refraining from contradicting or criticizing the President’s speech.
In time, Republican lawmakers will respond to the President’s speech. However, they want to stay out of the spotlight during the night of the President’s speech.
It is not wrong to refrain from contradicting or criticizing the President after the President gives a speech. So, Rep. Pelosi’s complaint against the Republicans is without merit.
If Rep. Pelosi wants to complain about something, then she should complain about Republican congressmen who refuse to attend the President’s speech. In my opinion, those congressmen are rude and lack class. They should have the courtesy of listening to the President even if they disagree with him.
As for Rep. Pelosi . . . well . . . a member of her staff needs to explain to her that Americans will listen to the President when he gives an important speech, but they will not listen to bunch of Republican lawmakers gripe when the first game of the NFL season is being played. Even the President knows better than to talk while the opening kickoff is taking place.
