Just as repeating the same action over and over in the hope of a different outcome is insane, so too is taking the word of those who never keep their word.
Why Yes, we are talking about you, Democrats.
It has been more than two years since the United States has had a budget. The reason this is so is that the 111th Congress (wholly controlled by the Democrats) never so much as took one up for their second session, while the Senate in the 112th Congress (controlled by, you guessed it, the Democrats) has refused to take up the Budget drafted and passed by the House of Representatives.
In part one of the budget kabuki, the House Republicans accepted a “deal” to cut spending from the Democrats to avoid a government shutdown. The deal was mostly smoke and mirrors.
In part two of the budget kabuki, the House (controlled in this Congress by the Republicans) has so far refused to increase the nation’s debt limit until the Democrats make some serious spending cuts. The Democrats in return promise to cut spending later if only the Republicans will raise taxes now.

If the Republican Party were a normal party, it would take advantage of this amazing moment. It is being offered the deal of the century: trillions of dollars in spending cuts in exchange for a few hundred million dollars of revenue increases.
Just one problem with that. The Democrats have promised to cut spending many a time. They have never (in the last three decades) done so. Trusting such a promise now is a game for fools.
