The Obamas just hosted their first “official” state dinner this week, honoring the Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh. Not satisfied with the meager trappings of the White House State Room, the Obamas chose to throw a lavish reception under a huge tent on the South lawn, replete with chandeliers, A-list musical guests, and Hollywood royalty.
Although this was labeled an “official” party, these kind of shin-digs have become the norm in the rockinest White House ev-ah.
Since their first six weeks in the White House, the Swingers-in-Chief have hosted numerous “Wednesday” parties, ranging from small, cocktail binges to rip-roaring, burn down the White House affairs.
Who can forget Inauguration Day? A $150 million extravaganza, from his Philly to Washington train ride, to the main event featuring a gaggle of celebrities and starry-eyed common-folk.
His bi-partisan Super Bowl party was a huge success, especially for the citizens of Kentucky who were paralyzed by an ice storm of biblical proportions.
His first “formal” ho-hum dinner was thrown for the nation’s Governors, while debate raged over the $800 billion stimulus boon-doggle. No expense was spared, as “Wagyu beef” was served, a cut which runs $100 per pound. Entertainment was of paramount importance, and the Obama’s did not disappoint. Earth, Wind, and Fire laid down grooves for the political royalty, stomping out songs like Boogie Wonderland, Shining Star, and September amongst the portraits of George and Martha Washington.
Courting the Latino crowd, the Obamas hosted “In Performance at the White House: Fiesta Latina,” showcasing prominent latin performers like Jennifer Lopez, Gloria Estefan, and Los Lobos.
They have chartered Air Force One to attend a Broadway play, even flying to Chicago to have a Valentine’s Day dinner at one of their favorite restaurants. Include their pricey vacation at $50,000 a week Martha’s Vineyard (not including security and Secret Service protection), and they’re living the high life.
Last, but not least, Obama held a lavish dinner in September to celebrate the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. Numerous cabinet members attended. Obama invited dozens of Muslim foreign dignitaries, praising them for their devotion and traditions per their religion. During his gushing tribute to Islam, he proclaimed “we celebrate a great religion and its commitment to justice and progress” and “the contribution of Muslims to the United States are too long to catalog because Muslims are so interwoven into the fabric of our communities and our country.”
He gladly partakes in feasting and merriment for a religion that spawned the animals who perpetrated September 11th, yet, he refuses to recognize and celebrate publicly the traditional annual National Day of Prayer.
Perhaps the most conspicuous and egregious snub of all has been his treatment of Israel.
Israel has been our only true democratic ally in the middle east for decades. Constantly attacked by the great Islamic religion, Obama treats her like a red-headed step child.
He has all but declared Israel the antagonist regarding the Palestinian conflict. He treated Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu like a pariah upon their first meeting. His speech to the Muslim world was more a damnation of Israeli policy than one of good faith, and he has condemned almost every action Israel has taken since he took office.
Now, as if to add insult to injury, he has decided the annual state dinner in honor of the Jewish observance of Hanukkah will be cut in half, blaming cost as the culprit, due to poor economic circumstances.
This from a man who has run up a $1.8 trillion deficit in his first 11 months in office.
Jewish Americans voted overwhelmingly for him.
One wonders if they’ll receive the same celebration as the Super Bowl.
