Pelosi’s Ethical Congress

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made some big promises when the Democrats took over Congress after the 2006 mid term elections. Among them was this whopper:

“This leadership team will create the most honest, most open, and most ethical Congress in history” – Speaker-Elect Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Press Release, November 16, 2006

Even Speaker Pelosi might grudgingly admit that promises like that would be easier to keep if the FBI didn’t get in the way. Last November the FBI raided the offices of PMA, a top defense lobbying firm that had close ties to Democrats:

“PMA, one of the top defense lobbying firms in Washington which has disintegrated in recent weeks, is under federal investigation focused on campaign contributions. PMA’s founder Paul Magliocchetti was a longtime defense appropriations staff member who worked closely with several key appropriators, including Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.), the defense panel chairman, and Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.).”

Rep. Peter Visclosky (D-Ind.), Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), and Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) have decided to return campaign contributions from the firm but Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.)….

has not indicated whether he will return any PMA money. He has received $105,000 from PMA employees from 2001 through 2008.

What a surprise! Congressman Jack “Haditha” Murtha is having trouble figuring out the right thing to do. That some of the questionable campaign contributions appear to have originated from the wallets of a golf pro and a wine steward at the Ritz Carlton hotel on Amelia Island (both of whom conveniently happened to be on the board of directors of defense contractor lobbying firm PMA) seems not to trouble Haditha Jack as much as it does his colleagues in the House and Senate (Representative Lofgren chairs the House ethics committee! You can’t make this stuff up).

The Hill goes on to note:

Over the years, PMA has benefited from its ties to Murtha and the other defense appropriators who have helped the firm secure millions of dollars in federal earmarks. A large portion of PMA’s business comes from companies headquartered in and around Murtha’s district in Johnstown, Pa….

When Murtha was struggling with an unexpected challenge in his reelection campaign after remarking that voters in his district were racist, PMA lobbyists donated thousands of dollars to his campaign.

Surely Congressman Murtha won’t object when declare him guilty until proven innocent. That Red Queen justice stings, doesn’t it Congressman?
