First we hear that we just may have House Majority Leader John Murtha. Now there’s word that Patrick “Leaky” Leahy wants to ensure that terrorists detained at Gitmo have full Habeas Corpus rights:
WASHINGTON, Nov. 11 (UPI) — A battle is shaping up between Democrats and the White House over the Military Commissions Act, signed into law last month by President George W. Bush.
Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., is expected to take over as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and The (Calif.) Daily Journal reports that Leahy is drafting a bill to undo portions of the new law in an effort to restore habeas corpus rights for enemy combatants.
A spokeswoman for Leahy told the newspaper the bill would be intended to repeal portions of the law that prevent some detainees from pursuing federal court challenges to the government’s authority to hold them indefinitely.
Spokeswoman Tracy Schmaler told the newspaper the goal is to “try and do something to reverse the damage.”
Scott L. Silliman, Director of the Center for Law, Ethics and National Security at Duke University School of Law, told the newspaper an attempt to amend the law could set up a partisan showdown in Congress, and possibly a presidential veto.
Civil rights attorneys filed a constitutional challenge to the act after Bush signed it Oct. 17, the Journal said.
Yep, that’s the Democrats for ya. They’re the party for terrorists rights.
And the “see I told you so” moments will keep coming.
Not one person should be surprised here. Well except for some swing voting moderates who are going to feel duped pretty soon.
We wouldn’t expect anything less from the party of terrorist symphatizers.
Soon the ignorant american people that just voted these dangerous people in office will wonder what in the hell they just did last Tuesday.
How does that phrase go? Oh yeah. We told you so.
Jumpin, we were reading each other’s minds!
I suggest new bumper stickers that remind me of the ones that came out right after Clinton was elected and people had regrets:
“Don’t blame me. I voted for the GOP.”
I like that idea. Maybe it needs some updating based on the sign of the times;
“Don’t blame me, I voted for victory”
If this idiocy is par for the course, and the Republicans run a fifty state campaign with real conservatives in 08, this past election may well be a blessing in disguise.
Murtha should be facing a firing squad, and Leaky’s bones should now be bleached white by the sun. This makes the election results even more fun. Appointing known traitors to leadership positions and then claim to be the party of the American–er Communist.
Jumpinjoe: I will have a bumper sticker: ‘I did not vote for the cut and run cowards’. Anyone want to make something out of it we’ll see how brave they are when faced with an old man that will shoot their a** if they threaten me.
I’m so glad that my elected officials are so concerned about TERRORIST rights when they say nothing of the torture and murder of US citizens and soldiers overseas at the hands of these same TERRORISTS who by the way AREN’T EVEN AMERICAN!! It’s just like these same politicians to be more worried about the Hispanic vote and do nothing to stem illegal aliens coming across the border and committing crimes like that murder of a NY actress. Is one dead AMERICAN CITIZEN worth ILLEGAL CHEAP LABOR or rights FOR NON-AMERICAN TERRORISTS???
Remember that website that came about after 2004, with all the goofy liberals posting pics of themselves with signs that said “We’re sorry” (or something like that) ?
Maybe soon we can do one with “We told you so.” : )
What are you all gonna say when it comes out that hundreds maybe thousands of people were swept up in raids in Afghanistan by the Northern Alliance and brought to the U.S. Military for a reward on the claimed basis they were “enemy combatants” while in fact they were innocent civilians held against their will for 3-4 years?
So far as I know of the 700 Gitmo detainees only 10 have been charged with anything. The denial of Habeas to these prisoners is not to protect us from terrorism so much as to protect Bush from huge embarrassment if not war crimes.
Democrats are not protecting terrorist we are protecting the Constitution. Something you all will toss in the lake because your leaders said, BOOO! Pitiful…we got subpoena power now….Mr. Bush and Cheney get to now answer questions.
Benjamin Franklin said,
“Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.”
I think he followed that with, “So stop being dumbass pussy cowards.”
To be honest, we’ll have to see what wins out among Democratic Representatives.
Many know they will be committing political suicide if they support such crap. There’s a little internal conflict between the sane and the insane coming for the Democratic Party. It may take the first serious vote on a moonbat issue to force them to pick sides, but I think it could happen sooner.
Welcome to the ‘Constitution of the World’, it protects everyone but the American Soldier.
When is President Bush going to declare martial law so we can track down and shoot the trairors? The super rich Holywood wonks predicted it would happen.
I love this election. It has shortened the life span of America by hundreds of years. We only have two years to go before total destruction.
New motto for the American Flag. “These colors don’t run except when carried by a dim”, and then they follow their ‘cut and run’ history and drag the flag through the slime and mud with them.
Now why would the Constitution apply to scumbag terrorists let alone non-US Citizen’s???
The Constitution of the United States does not apply to Terrorists or anyone else captured in combat. Even no citizens in the U.S. are covered by imigration laws, not the constitution which applies to citizens IAW the 14th amendment.
Terrorists are covered in the Geneva convention, they are allowed to be tried and shot on the spot since they wear no uniforms.
Enemy in uniform are to be held until the war is over, which could be 20 years but under the dim’s it will be 20 minutes before they surrender, again.
Allowing 5-6 million Iraqi citizens to be slaughtered doesn’t seem to bother a dim as long as they (dim’s)get their welfare check on time.
muirgeo the scum held at Guantanamo are not there for robbing liquor stores or Circle K stores. They are illegal enemy combatants captured while fighting US forces. There is no constitutional issue here.
You’re standing head and shoulders above the crowd, muirgeo. Nicely done. A true patriot.
When is President Bush going to declare martial law so we can track down and shoot the trairors?

As soon as President Pelosi takes power she will declare people like you enemy combatants. Then she’ll send Black helicopters to take you off to a dark place and no one will ever know you even existed. Who needs Habeas?
Now why would the Constitution apply to scumbag terrorists let alone non-US Citizen’s???

How do YOU know they’re terrorist????

HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT THEY ARE ENEMY COMBATANTS???
WHERE’S YOUR EVIDENCE?
muirgeo, a “true patriot?”
Of which country? Qaedastan?
Boy, we sure don’t want to afford any rights to people we arrested “by mistake”, do we? I mean, that would just be so… well… American of us.
Some 70 percent to 90 percent of Iraqi detainees were arrested “by mistake,” according to coalition intelligence officers cited in a Red Cross report disclosed Monday.
And just how many “Iraqi detainees” are in Gitmo brain child?
That’s so far off topic as to be in another universe.
Oh… stupid me. I should have looked at your link prior to posting. It’s not only off topic, but 2 and on half year old data.

Nice try buffoon.
This is what the Democrats believe should be their top priority legislatively ?
They weren’t ‘arrested’. They were captured on the battlefield.
Again, the Dems try to turn the WOT as a ‘law enforcement’ issue.
Again, the Reps try to turn the WOT into a semantics issue.
but 2 and on half year old data.
You seem to think that makes the data inaccurate. Instead, all it shows is how long this has been going on.
murigeo, lee, brian–(just so all will know who I am talking about)-don’t know how “old” Scrapiron is but I can bet you three whimpy ass liberals all at one time would be shitting in your panties if you met face to face with him and repeated your crap. He would kick your asses all the way back to San Fran> where you have to come from as you sound just like what Speaker Stretch represents–a bunch of queers. I am 71 and carry an oxygen tank but your kind scare me about as much as some little piss ant as you expose yourself for what you are by your vote–CUT AND RUN COWARDS. Lay it on them Scrap’.
Muriega, you are missing the point. Answer this question. Does the United States Constitution apply to citizens of Iraq? How about Pakistan? How about any other country not the US? As to them being terrorists, I think capturing them on the battlefield whilst engaging our troops is a good start on whether or not they are bad guys or not.
You’re standing head and shoulders above the crowd, muirgeo. Nicely done. A true patriot..
I was thinking the same thing as Jim. Muriego is a patriot. But for which army?
Exactly. You can always count on the liberals to be on “the other side.” Every time.
Sorry kids.
“I told ya so” was copyrighted by the San Francisco “hippies” who marched against the Iraq War back in Jan/Feb 2003.
God, those who “hippies” are so damn smart!!
BTW, they are still waiting for your mea culpas about Iraq.
