Airforce Major Jill Metzger, stationed at Manas Air Base, was shopping in a Kyrgyzstan mall with friends when she disappeared.

(CNN) — A U.S. Air Force officer is missing after a trip to a shopping mall in Kyrgyzstan, a U.S. military statement said Wednesday.
Maj. Jill Metzger, with the 376th Air Expeditionary Wing, was last seen shopping at the Zum Shopping Center with others from the Manas Air Base when she disappeared on Tuesday, the statement said.
“Major Metzger was last seen wearing a green sweater and blue jeans,” the statement said.
“She has blonde hair and blue eyes. She is in excellent athletic condition.”
Military Web sites describe Metzger as a top-flight marathoner.
Both the Kyrgyz police and the US military are searching for her:
BISHKEK, September 6, 2006 (RFE/RL) — Kyrgyzstan’s Interior Ministry and National Security Service say they have launched a joint operation to locate the U.S. air servicewoman who disappeared on September 5 in Bishkek.
The woman, who has been identified as Major Jill Metzger, is working at the U.S. Manas military air base, near Bishkek.
Manas air base public affairs officer Ann Carpenter told RFE/RL’s Kyrgyz Service that Metzger disappeared while shopping at Bishkek’s main department store (TsUM) with other U.S. base members.
“The [U.S.] 376th Air Expeditionary Wing base officials are working with the U.S. Embassy and local officials to locate the servicemember as soon as possible,” Carpenter added.
The U.S. Embassy in Bishkek has issued pictures of a blonde woman as part of the search operation.
Let’s hope she’s found quickly.
Update: Maj. Metzger was supposed to return home on Thursday and went to the mall to buy souvenirs for her family.

All the usual aerovac considerations would fly out the window in this case because of the publicity it had generated or would be expected to generate. Her quick evacuation is the result of the Manas Wing Commander getting on the phone and saying “I want this Major on a plane to Landstuhl. NOW.” Plane appears, paperwork happens after the fact. I doubt JRMO even got involved at the beginning.
“Medevac” is a term the Army uses.
“Aerovac” is AF language.
(They mean basically the same thing. Usually the Army is “medevac-ing” by chopper to a tent hospital, from which the USAF then “aerovacs” to the big theater hospital.)

I’m more farmiliar with the academic blog movement. The “beat the news” bloggers at work here are a completely different breed.
Speculate all you want, but get ahold of yourselves and act like adults. And inventing a theory based off of a few unfavorable accounts of one seeing her “too drunk” does not meet that test. From all accounts, this was a very confident woman that wouldn’t scare easily, as in ‘pass out’ from fear if put into a highly stressful situation.
How about we get another mock intereview or two?
Maybe we can all talk again about how the woman’s husband dared to show his face on television to raise awareness. He was willing to endure probing questions about the possible reasons for her disappearance to this end. Bastard.

The JMRO is an office that will tell any 06 (medical officers included) to go take an aspirin… Field Commanders and Medical Officers alike… DON’T TELL JMRO what to do. JMRO tells THEM what will be done. PERIOD!!..

Blood Transfusion gone bad—indicates she lost large volume of blood needing replacement. Typically complications are immediate and sever resulting from Blood type and RH mismatch or anaphylaxis. Although there could be clotting and other problems, however, ability of self mobility on two feet causes me to question this.
Although classification priority for transport is as provided, nothing is reported indicating an aero medical evacuation aircraft was diverted or generated to fly an unscheduled flight. It is just as likely the alert PJs (if any in area) were put on any scheduled or special generated C-13O/C-141 transport sortie to provide as needed medical care, especially if there was driving non-medical reasons to move her.

They took her to Bagram first, right? If it was a life or death emergency or close to it, that would make sense. Otherwise, even to just get her out of there, why not a bird that was headed to Ramstein instead of the opposite direction?
I assume the clinic or whatever at Manas doesn’t have even rudimentary surgical facilities.

Actually, our ORIGINAL theories were due to the fact Josh and parents were interviewed. For them to take a risk would either be DUMB or they KNEW she was fine and were pleading for her to come home.
If you can be nice and add your point of view, please feel free. I am open to the trafficking theory if you can explain: dye on hands, mini-bomb, trance-like state (you already confirmed she was too strong to pass out), cell phone calls, taxi ride and pay phone use.

No one here is trying to “hang the Major”. It’s more a question of what she “didn’t do” that bothers me.
She didn’t stick to SOP.. (Standard Operating Proceedures) This kind of stuff gets military people “dead”.. if you know what I mean.
She didn’t seek help from her ‘buddies’.. That too is standard proceedure for military people.
She didn’t alert her buddies of a potential threat… which could have gotten them all ‘dead’..
In short… she failed to conduct herself as a senior “Field Grade” officer.
Now, I don’t know about you… but given the option… I would probably follow an Eagle Scout into battle than our all-American Blue Eyed Beauty Major Metzger.

I very seriously doubt that there were any A/Es in the air at that time in the vicinity… They probably did as jocha already mentioned… Put her on a C130 or C141 sitting out on the tarmac at Manas… (The medical tent at Ganci is not equipped for that kinda stuff, nor would they have risked ‘holding’ her there too long for medical reasons)
Once in flight…Bagram medical facilities would have been on the phone with Ganci medical personnel trying to get as much info as possible to help them when she landed. Then they (Bagram) would have put in a call to JMRO giving the diagnosis and a request for AE. The attending would then get on the phone with Landstuhl and get a hold of a physician who would get the down and dirty on her situation. JMRO would then touch base with the AE people and the AE Squadron would either divert a flight already in the area, or set one up to go get her..
I certainly don’t have a problem with people pointing out any deviations from SOP. But are you really trying claim both that those points are the dominant idea throughout this thread or that I was speaking to those points?

It is unlikely leave would be approved until after the inquiry is complete and if the inquiry reveals need for UCMJ action it is unlikely leave would be approved until that process has been completed.
Also, there was discussion of putting physicians as part of the aeromedical evacuation crews a few years ago, but I’m clueless if this was implemented. If not aeromedical medical personnel consist of one nurse and several enlisted medical technicians.
Patients are required to be medically stable for the flight. Another reason indicating if flight was for medical care an available C-130/C-141 transport was used. Then it would be need to select who would fly the mission and how many physicians, physician assistants, nurse practicianers or IDMTs were available having the qualifications to transport an unstable patient by air.

Anyway, with the news being so sparse, I figured it was time to give another opinion, although I said I wouldn’t after OIG’s posts. Wasn’t it interesting that OIG continued to post multiple times after chastising others for posting on gov’t time? Hey, dude, you are just feeding our obsession! Anyways, take care, I hope there is resolution soon so you fools can stop speculating. I’m a fool with you, though.
As an educated, decorated and stellar officer ;-), I support the abortion theory. However, I had a couple more beers before posting, so who knows what the truth is….out.
The AF now has CCAT Teams (Critical Care Air Transport). They include a critical care physician, a respiratory therapist, and a critical care nurse. They sit around in places like Balad, Iraq waiting for critically ill/wounded patients, and then they jump as a team into the transport aircraft and take the ill/wounded casualty to the Big Hospital (in Iraq, it’s Landstuhl). They can be mobilized for action in any part of the world, but they would ONLY be mobilized for critically ill patients. I would doubt MAJ Metzger was critically ill if she was able to walk to a farmhouse, then sit down with the Kyrgyz police.
For a non-critically-injured/ill patient, a flight nurse or medic might be the only one or two in attendance. For psych patients, a “companion” is required, and it’s usually a non-medical person like a friend or colleague.
What probably happens in Manas: they would have basic ER and surgical capabilities there. They probably have a small in-patient medical ward for things like the flu, pneumonia, infection. They might be able to handle simple operations like appendicitis. They have some Flight Surgeons, some Family Docs, some surgeons, a psychiatrist or psychologist, a dentist, a basic pharmacy, X-Ray. Being a US base in a foreign country, they have to offer basic medical services to the troops. They could certainly THEORETICALLY handle a case of dehydration/assault/intoxication, but in a case like this they WOULD NOT. They would send it out to the Big Hospital because it’s too Touchy. If there was any hint of sexual assault or anything like it, they’d want a certified sexual assault nurse/OB-GYN to handle it, and they wouldn’t have that at Manas. They probably have psychiatric services at Manas, but would NOT touch this case with a 10-foot-pole there. The experts for this kind of thing, WHATEVER it was, are at Landstuhl. They would have done immediate stabilization (in her case, an IV and some reassurance), and then shipped her out.
There are vanishingly few Urgent Aerovacs out of places like Manas. No one is getting shot over there and most of the troops are healthy. There will be some chest pains among those astonishingly unhealthy 350-lb American contractors that always seem to be at those places, and they may need to go Urgent, but otherwise everything else will just sit around waiting for a few days for the “scheduled bird” which goes to Germany once or twice a week. (My experience in these kinds of locations is that no one even KNOWS HOW TO DO an Urgent Aerovac, it’s a boondoggle every time, no one can find the # to Scott AFB, no one has the paperwork, everyone’s new and has never done this before, etc).
MAJ Metzger’s case would have been handled at the highest levels because of the international publicity. The Commander of the theater (I don’t know who that is) probably was involved. She got on a plane ASAP, screw the JMRO, whatever was sitting on the flightline and had gas in it. She may have had a nurse with her, or a Flight Surgeon, and she may have been plugged into an IV or something, but she looked pretty perky in the welcome home pic so she probably wasn’t in bad shape.

I, for one, find it perfectly reasonable – and admirable – that several military officers have taken it upon themselves to stake this lonely blog outpost as the last bastion wherein to uphold the honor of the military as a whole against such disease-ridden slatterns as Major Jill Metzger. I find it completely adorable, and not juvenile or silly in the least, that we call each other to arms (swords and kevlar and all that) to battle any explanation other than one that includes lots of promiscuous adultery, STDs, illegal drugs, and botched abortions.
I have to agree with Deb G, Wizbang, Happy et al that there is plenty of hard, factual evidence that Major Jill Metzger is a total dirty whore, devoid of any love for her newlywed husband and unable to control her overwhelming sexual urges in a Turd World country. I know they’ve convinced me beyond a shadow of a doubt! As they have shown, Major Metzger has proven to be an idiot who is 33 years old but knows nothing about birth control, and therefore found herself in the unenviable position of an unwanted pregnancy.
