Hit and Run in San Francisco

The SF Gate reports:

As many as 14 people were injured this afternoon by a motorist who drove around San Francisco running them down before he was arrested, authorities said.

Seven of those injured were in critical condition, police and firefighters said.

Authorities have identified the man who was arrested as Ohmeed Aziz Popal, who has addresses in Ceres (Stanislaus County) and Fremont.

Authorities said they believe Popal was the same driver who ran over and killed a 55-year-old man walking in a bicycle lane in Fremont, at Fremont Boulevard near Ferry Lane, just after noon. That crash scene is blocks from Popal’s Fremont address, where he had most recently been living.

Popal was arrested at a Walgreens at Spruce and California streets.

In San Francisco, the attacks began around 1 p.m., but it was unclear in what order:

• Two people, one of them a child, were critically injured around by a sport-utility vehicle on the 3500 block of California Street in the Richmond District.

• Three people were hit at California and Fillmore streets. Witnesses said they included a man with a broken hip and a woman with a gashed head.

• Two people were seriously hurt at Bush and Pierce streets and one person was seriously injured at Bush and Buchanan streets, police said. One person suffered minor injuries in an incident at 1850 Fillmore Street.

• Two other people suffered minor injuries when they were hit at Pine at Divisadero streets, and another two were hit and suffered minor injuries at Divisadero and Bush Street.

Police say one person was killed and at least 13 were injured when a man struck pedestrians with his sport utility vehicle in the San Francisco Bay area.

San Francisco police say the SUV driver deliberately ran into pedestrians and motorists at several locations. Police arrested the driver, who’s from suburban Fremont, where they believe he struck and killed a pedestrian.

An aide to San Francisco’s mayor says the driver then headed into the city, where he injured at least 13 people over a 20-minute span in several neighborhoods. Three victims are in critical condition.

Police are trying to figure out a motive for the attacks, which ended when officers managed to box in the Honda Pilot. It came to a stop in the middle of a street, its front end and windshield smashed in.

The injured driver is reported in stable condition. The mayor’s aide identifies him as Omeed Popal.

AJ Strata:

The scene in San Fransisco today of a man mowing down people with his car is eerily reminiscent of the Muslim student who used the same weapon (an SUV) to attempt to kill students in his little version of Jihad against the West…The earlier incident was in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in March of this year. Can’t help but notice the commonalities.

Update: Hugh Hewitt is getting reports that Mr. Popal did his hitting and running in a Jewish neighborhood and that one of the victims was run down in in front of a Jewish Community Center.

Update II: The American Thinker:

A run amok driver mowed down pedestrians in San Francisco today, and is believed to have done the same in nearby Fremont earlier. His name has finally been released, and Bookworm has done a little sleuthing, finding that his name is common in Afghanistan. Obviously, no conclusions can be drawn, but you can be fairly sure that the local and national media will not be interested in pursuing any possible terror angle.
