ABC News reports:
There is new evidence that North Korea may be preparing for an underground test of a nuclear bomb, U.S. officials told ABC News.
“It is the view of the intelligence community that a test is a real possibility,” said a senior State Department official.
A senior military official told ABC News that a U.S. intelligence agency has recently observed “suspicious vehicle movement” at a suspected North Korean test site.
The activity includes the unloading of large reels of cable outside P’unggye-yok, an underground facility in northeast North Korea. Cables can be used in nuclear testing to connect an underground test site to outside observation equipment. The intelligence was brought to the attention of the White House last week.
Even before this most recent intelligence, there has been growing concern within the U.S. government that North Korea has been moving toward a nuclear test. North Korea is believed to have enough nuclear material to build as many as a dozen nuclear bombs, but it has never tested one. A successful test would remove any doubt that North Korea is a nuclear power.
Hmmmm. Wonder how many Iranian tech reps will be observing this?
Republicans hand over $95 million to North Korea to assist them in developing their nuclear capabilities and then waive the requirements to allow inspections!!!
Two proliferation-proof reactors were built, but the dumb-ass Republicans “…waived the Framework’s requirement that North Korea allow inspectors to ensure it has not hidden away any weapons-grade plutonium from the original reactors.”
Republicans… who needs them. Vote for a smarter America this November.

Buff Buff Buff!!!
Vote for a smarter America this November.
That’s leaves you out, then.
it’s a pre-sale demonstration for iran
Buff Buff Buff!!!
Keep that up, Don, and you’ll go blind.

Oh, these right wing genuises. Are you all too embarrassed by the fact that Bush caused this debacle to comment on the substance of the post, or are you just too busy “buffing”??
Perhaps after they make their underground nuclear test we will make a much more substantial aboveground nuclear test.
What exactly was the damage in doing that, Lee? Please explain to us dense Republicans what Bush gave away by doing that?
As I see it, we had two choices:
1) Let the “Agreed Framework” (from the Clinton administration, I might add) fall apart because we required inspections. In this scenario, Korea says to us and the IAEA, “screw you” and continues to produce plutonium from their current reactors.
2) Waive the inspections, allowing N. Korea their piddly amount of plutonium and then dismatle their ability to produce more.
In either scenario, N. Korea gets plutonium, but in your “smart Bush” world, they get to produce a whole lot more.
Of course, we could have just gone with scenario 3: a full scale invasion of North Korea. Would you have preferred that, Lee?
The $95m doesn’t go to North Korea’s nuclear programme…it was for the purchase of fuel oil only. A little factoid your clipping leaves out.
Context is your friend:
The waiver was a message to Pyongyang. They had not at the time provided enough evidence for the White House to certify its compliance to Congress. With the waiver, Pyongyang was put on notice to comply or else further fuel-oil aid would be placed in jeopardy.
In other words, we are saying “we will help with your energy situation (via fuel oil), but you need to get to your agreement with the Framework.” It’s not a bunch of money sent directly to Kim Jong Il. The money is used to purchase and ship oil to Korea.
Now that I’ve put the proper context and facts into it, your statement “Republicans hand over $95 million to North Korea to assist them in developing their nuclear capabilities” is pretty misinformed.
kbiel:
You had posted before I did, but as I stated, the money in question doesn’t go to North Korea, it goes towards shipping of fuel-oil. The evil oil companies are the ones who will receive this money.

Though, really, it’s not all your fault, Lee…the BBC decided not to include in the article what exactly that $95m was going to be used for. But then, the BBC has been known to drop important relevant details in order to shade a story.
Apparently my caution that continued buffing will make you go blind went unheeded – or it is too late. The BBC quote included mentions that fuel oil will be supplied while the funded reactors are being built, but the important key which you are intentionally avoiding is that the requirement for inspections was waived by the Republican President. Stop your buffing, and take responsibility, Republicans…
Another inconvenient truth (if only you guys could read this wouldn’t be needed, but here goes):
The republicans ignored the caution, and waived the right to inspections. Maybe they were too busy buffing as well….
I have to sadly agree with eman:
I believe our moritorium on above ground testing is soon to end, both above the 39th parallel and in Persia. Perhaps with a joint effort with the IDF.
Buy your iodine pills while they are still cheap.
Do we need anymore reasons to keep a eye on them?
I only read the article for context and it is easy to infer, as I did, that the $95M went to either the fuel oil, the reactor construction or both. Lee’s argument had nothing to do with the money, it couldn’t since he would be criticizing Madeline Dimbulb. His stupid argument was only to blame Bush for waiving some inspections that were supposed to occur before Bush released the money.
No, I took that issue head on and told you the consequences of not waiving the inpections. You chose to ignore my reasoning because logic and facts tend to give you a severe headache.
Now run along. The adults are having a serious discussion here.
There’s a rumor that the first nuclear missle NK builds will be named that CA-1 (Carter-Albright 1).

Well, that being the case, I suppose we ought to be blowing the dust off of our “open air” test program and maybe drop a few small “ones” just to see if they’re still packing the punch we expect.
Never hurts to rotate your stock whether you’re talking about luncheon meats or thermonuclear weapons.
Kim, it’s up to you big fella.
See you on the high ground.

So, Clinton (a Democrat) negotiates the Agreed Framework, put on the spot by Jimmy Carter.
In Lee’s world, that’s hunky-dory.
Bush, waiving the inspections (in the interests of preserving the US-ROK relationship, since he had visited South Korea just the previous month, and ROK Prez Kim Dae-jung had staked everything on his “Sunshine Policy” with North Korea), is an idiot.
But wait, does that mean that Lee therefore agrees with Bush, when he kills the Agreed Framework, six months later?
Why do I suspect that Lee was just as frothing about Bush being hard-line about North Korea?
Oh, right. B/c he’s intellectually dishonest.
LO, Lee is a master at lying through use of partial truths… There’s no telling what he actually thinks, sinces he’s so totally consumed by BDS.
All you right-wingers look like absolute morons now, esp. MajorDouche. Looks like we finally found those WMDs – and not a moment too soon – we’ve got elections coming up…
Kim Jong Il wanted nukes – well, now he’s got ’em and WE PAID FOR THEM WITH A CHECK SIGNED BY DUMBYA. Maybe the funds did in fact purchase fuel oil, but take a wild guess what KJI was doing with the rest of his filthy lucre?
IMPEACH!
We can console ourselves with the knowledge that they won’t have a ‘Soviet-designed-accident-waiting-to-happen’, and that a nuclear catastrophe would be intentional.
And as far as playing with the children – we’ll leave that up to you bible-thumping pedophile hypocrites…
