Russian special forces caught up with him and a few of his colleagues and blew them all to bits.
MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) — Russia’s most wanted man, Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev, has been killed by the country’s special forces, the state security chief has told President Vladimir Putin.
FSB chief Nikolai Patrushev said on Monday that Basayev, who claimed responsibility for the 2004 Beslan school attack in which 331 people, half of them children, were killed, was planning an attack to coincide with Russia hosting the G8 summit of world leaders this weekend.
CNN’s Matthew Chance said the killing was a massive victory for the security services and a huge blow for the rebel leadership.
Russian television showed Patrushev meeting Monday with Putin to tell him about the special operation in Ingushetia — a republic bordering Chechnya — in which Basayev was killed in the early morning hours of Monday.
The Russian agents exploded a truck bomb next to several cars in which Basayev and other rebels were riding, according to Interfax, which was quoting Ingush Deputy Prime Minister Bashir Aushev.
“This is retaliation he deserves for killing our children in Beslan, Budennovsk, all the terrorist acts his bandits perpetrated in Moscow and other regions of Russia, including Ingushetia and the Chechen Republic,” Patrushev said in an Interfax report.
Law enforcement officials in Ingushetia told Interfax Basarev’s body was in pieces but it was identified by his head and by the fact that he had earlier lost a foot.
Good. I hope he’s suffering in Dante’s Inferno right now.
Russia may not be such a great shot when it comes to that whole democracy and freedom thang, but at least they know how to dispose of the baddies.
Stories like this always remind me of The Onion’s story about the fate of the 9/11 hijackers: http://www.theonion.com/content/node/38673
Does my heart good.
I saw another report that he was in a car near where a truck was being loaded with explosives and died in a massive explosion. It is not clear that the Russians had any direct role in it – it could have been one of those “occupational hazards” terrorists must face.
Still, the world is better off with this filthy murderer dead than alive. Enjoy hell, Basayev!
õ¿õ
Room temperature.
‘Nother one down, more on the horizon.
Another thought about this. We all know that Abu Zarqawi has been a very lonely person in the far reaches of Hell. With the take out of the Chechen terrorist, he will have someone to talk to. I wonder if the Zarkman will share his 72 virgins that look like Helen Thomas?
According to Dante, the greatest irony is that the ninth circle of hell (or seventh–I can’t be bothered to check what the center circle is now) is the furthest distance from God and is thus frozen ice–total isolation. Zarqawi and Basayev are now individually wrapped popcicles.
Good news.
You can almost hear the inevitable liberal whine: “If the Russians can catch/kill Basayev in a little over a year, why can’t we catch/kill OBL?”
Sad, but you know it’s coming. Just wait…
“The Russian agents exploded a truck bomb next to several cars in which Basayev and other rebels were riding, according to Interfax”
Oooooooo, in a classic islamofashist way to, whether intentional or not. IED for teh win.
IMHO it couldn’t have happened any better to a more rotten dispicable SOB.
this was soooooo much more humane than arresting him and sending him to Gitmo!!
we need to start treating our enemies just as humanely.
no more “Halt…or I’ll shoot”, just SHOOT!! 🙂
I hope they have found the correct person. Because whoever does such sick metnal acts of killing children does not need to be killed in such a nice way.
We should show such killings by choppng them into bits and feeding them to live lions on TV.
How esle will people have fear no to do such evil deeds.
Shooting is a very simple exercis to do which is not the correct thing, the most elaborate methods of torture ned to be adopted.
“I saw another report that he was in a car near where a truck was being loaded with explosives…”
And I think I saw a report early today that said it was one of his own trucks in his caravan that exploded.
Either way – good riddance – feed his bits to the birds.
Peter F – FYI – OBL will not be caught until it serves the political interests of the republican party. Right now republicans have a better chance of holding onto the White House if OBL isn’t caught, so there is no incentive for the adminstration to try. Sad, but true.
Lee,
If you don’t like Republicans because they are a Party that knows where OBL is and does not take him out. And you obviously don’t like the Democrats because, well, they knew where OBL was and decided to do nothing about him when the offer was made, who are you throwing your support behind on the war on terror in this election cycle?
I question the timing. . .
BTW, Lee – “OBL will not be caught until it serves the political interests of the republican party.”
Exactly what is it you’re saying here, Lee? That the JCS know where OBL is, but has ordered he not be taken? That the CINC knows where OBL is, but has not shared this information with the troops in the field or has ordered he not be taken? Or that all the troops in the field have been ordered (directly or indirectly) not to hunt for OBL? Or are you suggesting we already have OBL in custody and are helping him to make his tapes, to preserve the lie that he’s a free and active agent?
You believe that the civilian and / or military men in charge of day-to-day operations in the field know where OBL is – or have a pretty good idea – yet, because the time isn’t politically right for him to be captured, they’re letting him stew and plot?
I’ve given up questioning your patriotism, Lee, because it’s obvious you haven’t any. I question your fucking sanity.
Oh do shut up, Lee. That makes absolutely NO sense whatsoever. If and when OBL is caught/killed, whomever is in the WH is going to see their poll numbers sky rocket. If anything, not catching OBL is having a negative effect on Bush’s poll numbers. Cripes, look at the affect killing Zarqawi, the borthers Hussein and Saddam had on his poll, all the poll numbers went upward–albeit for just a short time. Killing/capturing OBL would be the political and poll equivalent of the Iranian Hostages being released on the day of Reagan’s inaguration.
So FYI, Lee. You post is sad, but none of it is true.
I meant what I said – is english your second language? There’s no push to find OBL because there is no incentive for the republican administration to put him behind bars.
I didn’t say that we knew where he was, or already had him in custody, or any of the other whackjob foil-hatted thoughts you creeps think up, just that there is no push to find him – and it’s politically motivated.
It only took a few months for the Republicans to figure out that they would benefit politically by not finding bin-Laden. The fact that your fearless leader actually was stupid enough to vocalize that we were giving up is a different, separate issue.
Lee is a propagandist who doesn’t care about the truth or facts. His goal is to smear the US military and Bush. He is simply a propaganda tool for the terrorists.
Peter F said: “If and when OBL is caught/killed, whomever is in the WH is going to see their poll numbers sky rocket.”
So if you acknowlege that there is a political advantage to finding bin-Laden are you naive enough to think that the timing of when bin-laden is found isn’t a matter for political strategy?
OBL will not be found until after the ’08 presidential election. Period
OBL is such a convenient tool for the Leftist like Lee. If they don’t find him it’s because the Republicans are waiting for a politically opportune moment. If he is found and killed they will claim it was done to be a polically opportune moment. Damned if you do or don’t. If OBL were killed tomoor Lee would be the first to post it was for political gain.
I remember the likes of Lee squawking about waiting for the “October surprise” of OBL being killed just before the elections. When it didn’t happen you didn’t hear a peep from the Lying Left.
The reality is Lee thinks this way because he projects the way the Left sees things. It’s exactly what they would do (hell, it IS exactly what the Democrats did under Clinton).
Lee is just another pseudo-intellectual puppet of the the lying Left and he is cimply too dense and brainwashed to think anyone else thinks differently. Classic case of projection. Because Lee and his ilk are only concerned about regaining power even if it means their country being destroyed they can’t conceive of anything else.
Let the USA be destroyed so long as Bush goes down a couple of points in the polls. Pathetic.
Faith+1:
Exactly. It is the perfect argument for people like Lee. If OBL is found after the election, it proves his, er, “point; if found before 2008, the argument would go that the GOP was keeping him for the purpose of influencing elections. And while he never outwardly states it and presents it, is what if it’s another Republican in office after 2008 and they catch/kill OBL? Simple, scenario #2 is then sited or some modified version thereof.
It’s the proverbial win-win scenario argument. It’s bullshit and unreal no doubt. But it’s win-win, at least in their distorted view.
And besides, we all know that when we capture/kill OBL it will be the end of Islamofascism as we know it.
/sarcasm off
You need a new rubber-band on your hat, Peter F. – this one is loose.
All I’m going by with the President has said:
At least you guys haven’t declared he didn’t really say those words, yet. LoveAmerica Idiot should be along any second however to declare that the MSM edited the video and had an actor mimic the President’s voice to make him say those words….
Lee…
What Bush said: “It’s not our priority.”
What you tranlsated it into: “we’re giving up“
nice tranlsation, sport.
Faith+1, et al – this quote from Billy Madison should be thought after reading any post from Lee:
“Mr. Madison, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.”
What Bush said: “It’s not our priority.”
What you tranlsated it into: “we’re giving up”
nice tranlsation, sport.
I’m sure in priority terms it ranks somewhere lower than getting that flag burning amendment passed… and it’s obviously less important that the approaching congressional elections.
but you conventiently forgot to spin — I mean “translate” — this, sport.
Which sums it up nicely, and puts the preceding quote (emphasis added)
into perspective. No, they haven’t given up – they just don’t care and so have stopped trying for now.
Thanks for the clarification.
Big Mo,
While not as sucinct as “Blood For Odin”, you’ve captured the truth perfectly.
While I don’t know if Lee is a fat drunkard, I often think of Dean Wormer from Animal House while reading Lee’s version of the facts: “Fat drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son”
scsiwuzzy – exactly. They have no understanding of context. No understanding of the big picture. No patience for the intricacies of a long war.
All they can do is take sound bites, out-of-context quotes and bits of news from the breathless 24/7 big media and use that top fling poo at the cages and scream “See?! See?!”
If people of their mentality were ever in charge during the Civil War, the Revolution or WWII, we would have lost. Sadly, their kind ruled the roost for a time during the Vietnam era, and we did lose.
Monkey poo? is that how you refer to direct quotes from our President?
If people of your mentality were in charge we’d be facing the likley prospect of a civil war in Iraq after wasting 2500 US lives and billions and billions of dollars.
Oh, wait – you guys are in charge and we are facing exactly that.
…and still no OBL.

cool… a village idiot commenting on his own post!
There is a real simple answer, not that the moonbats will accept it. OBL is not as easy to catch because he is not conducting operations any longer, unlike Basayev. You see, to gather intel one of two things must happen. Either someone close to the subject must betray the subject or the subject must expose themself. OBL is probably in a cave and has one or two people who know where he is and they are probably his only lines of communication with the outside world. The downside to this is that it makes it difficult for us to find him, but the upside is that he is rendered inoperative as an enemy.
BTW, R.I.P.B. Basayev (rest in pieces, bastard).
Sheesh. Twice in 2 weeks we face this BS about President Bush not interested in Bin Laden, by selectively quoting a response in a press conference. I’m gonna repeat myself, apologies to those that already read this.
We covered this while discussing the SECOND BIN LADEN TAPE.
“Kinda changes it from, “Oh, Bin Laden? I don’t give a s**t about Bin Laden!,” when you read the full quote in context, doesn’t it?”
No, not at all. He explains why he isn’t concerned, but reiterates that he isn’t looking for bin-Laden, and doesn’t care where he is. Here is where that’s illustrated (working chronologically from top to bottom):
And the idea of focusing on one person is — really indicates to me people don’t understand the scope of the mission.”
Well, OBL is the man who is principally responsible for the attack on the United States, but Bush wants to minimize the reasons why he isn’t concerned, so he tells us that capturing OBL is not all that important.
Tell it to the families of those that died on 9/11, Chimp.
“I’m more worried about making sure that our soldiers are well-supplied; that the strategy is clear;” etc.
Yes, Yes banana-breath, we understand that you want us to believe that you don’t care because you have better things to do….
“And, again, I don’t know where he is. I — I’ll repeat what I said. I truly am not that concerned about him. I know he is on the run. I was concerned about him, when he had taken over a country.”
Ok, he’s repeated that he isn’t concerned about OBL. Nothing new there…
“And we’ve got more work to do. See, that’s the thing the American people have got to understand, that we’ve only been at this six months.”
Here he goes on to tell us that we shouldn’t expect his indifference to change anytime soon.
This was March 2002. Four years and three months have passed, and Bush still doesn’t care.
More words added… nothing but excuses and admonitions that we shouldn’t care either — thanks for trying WM.
To get the subject off of Lee’s incessant carping — can we all agree that, hopefully, Basayev is suffering pain so great the Germans would be at a loss to adequately describe it?
-=Mike
can we all agree that, hopefully, Basayev is suffering pain so great the Germans would be at a loss to adequately describe it?
No, but he ceases to exist, and that’s a good thing.
mantis – well…he ceased to exist on earth. He will is suffering eternal torment.
And I’m saying we cannot all agree on that. I don’t think he’s with 72 virgins either; he just ceases to be.
I don’t know about President Bush’s poll rating going up after this piece of fantastic news, but ole rooty poot’s numbers took an upswing. The next target is either Mullah Omar or the man himself. Hell why don’t we send Lee into the hornet’s nest, barehanded. if he so anxious to catch Usama?
I don’t have to catch OBL. U.S. forces will capture him shortly after we put a Democrat in the White House. Once OBL becomes a priority, he’ll be captured in short order.
Wow Lee, if it’s that simple, why hasn’t any other world power stepped in and nabbed OBL?
