Yesterday, Wizbang! was the target of a massive Distributed Denial Of Service attack (If I understand Kevin correctly, and that is not a given). We were flooded with comments coming in so fast, it crashed our server.
This, to me, is a badge of honor. You really gotta be doing something right if you get folks that angry. The only other sites I can recall being singled out for such attention are Aaron’s Rantblog and Little Green Footballs. And as the author around here who’s generated the most comments recently, I personally consider it a badge of honor.
It’s an easy thing for me to say. I’m just a “section editor,” which basically means that I write my pieces, clean up some of the junk comments and trackbacks, and watch for egregious typos in others’ works. (Kevin and I have never really discussed just what my titles involve, and so far all it really means is I have to re-do my home-made business cards every year or so.) Kevin is the guy who has to deal with the really heavy, technical stuff and attacks like yesterday. It’s a minor annoyance to me at best. Hell, I have four standing offers to write at other blogs (one even offered me my own subdomain), and if Wizbang were to go dark permanently, I’d pick up and move on. Lord knows I have absolutely no intention of doing so — I really like it around here, and owe Kevin for giving me my big break lo these 2+ years ago — but the plain and simple fact is that I will not live or die by whether or not the site is up.
One odd thing that occurs to me, though: I don’t recall any of the big liberal sites getting attacked as those on the right are prone to. Has Daily Kos, Talking Points Memo, Democratic Underground, or Atrios’ sites ever been shut down by hackers? Have ANY liberal sites ever been the target of a massive attack of the magnitude the right-wingers are subjected to?
