A while ago, the big highway signs marking entry into New Hampshire were redone. Under the generic welcome message and the governor’s name was a great big slogan — “YOU’RE GOING TO LOVE IT HERE.” This, unsurprisingly, did not sit well with a lot of New Hampshire residents, who thought the slogan too generic and silly — myself included. I shrugged it off (living next to Massachusetts, one learns to not sweat the small stuff when it comes to governmental idiocy), but a lot of others didn’t. They felt that New Hampshire deserves better than some recycled, bland advertising slogan. In fact, we have a far better one that we adopted back in 1945. Every New Hampshire license plate loudly proclaims the immortal words of General John Stark, Revolutionary War Hero, who proclaimed “Live Free Or Die; Death Is Not The Worst of Evils.”
So down with “You’re going to love it here!,” in graceful, welcoming script; and up with LIVE FREE OR DIE.
