There’s nothing quite so satisfying in an argument as when your opponent says something that just perfectly encapsulates your argument for you. In the debate over illegal aliens, it’s happened yet again.
Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff recently announced that he wanted to end the “catch and release” policy on illegal aliens being caught and arrested, then let go on bail or personal recognizance until their trial. (Speaking personally, I think this sounds great, but I’ll believe it when I see it.)
The administration believes immigrants who are here to make better lives for themselves should be treated like fish,” said Ali Noorani, executive director of the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition.
Well said, Mr. Noorani. You’re quite right. It’s time to stop treating illegal aliens like fish. Instead, let’s treat them like criminals — keep them locked up until our legal system is done with them, THEN deport them. This notion of letting them go on bail or personal recognizance, hoping despite repeated evidence to the contrary that they’ll actually show up for trial, is so stupid as to be laughable.
So yeah, let’s get rid of that policy. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
