A while ago, Kevin poached on my territory and wrote about a Bow, NH star athlete and high school student who was going to fail to graduate because of a missing Physical Education student.
This morning’s Union Leader has the final word on her story. Isabel Gottlieb’s old school went back and “tweaked” her transcript, to better comply with New Hampshire standards, and she will graduate with her class after all.
The lesson to be learned: when you change systems, in school or anything, triple-check EVERYTHING to see what does and does not carry over.
Good luck to Isabel. With this lesson behind her, I suspect she’s got a great future ahead of her.

Huh?
John, I live in Manchester, NH. Bow is just about ten miles north of me. I kind of feel territorial about New Hampshire and New England stories. Truth is, I’d considered writing about the story when it first happened, but Kevin beat me to it.

Well, I hope they found that missing student. 😉
I think Jay simply made a language gaffe. No big deal. Substance matters far more than form, so if you understand the message, the writer has done his job.

Oh, really is that what the lesson is? Because it sounds like to me like the lesson being learned is: if a kid is a so-called “star,” then that kid will get preferential treatment over the other kids…which a slap in the face to the American standard of fair and equal treatment.
I do not believe in ‘tweaking’ transcripts or ‘changing the system’ to suit a double-standard of unfairness.
If the Gottlieb student was missing a requirement, that’s the student’s own damn fault. Suck it up, GROW UP, stop whining, and do what’s required of you to do.
But because this particular student was some sort of star athlete, she had people ‘tweak’ requirements to cater to her, huh?
Are they called ‘requirements’ because they’re not required? Hmph.
Meanwhile an avarage-Joe student also missing a so-called ‘requirement’ of course wouldn’t be permitted to get his former-school to change the rules for his benifit. No, he is just told…”Tough sh*t!”
Amazing how a rules and requirements can just be tossed out the window like meaningless trash for SOME people. Huh?
