The Minuteman Project — the volunteers who are patrolling our southern border to spot and report illegal aliens crossing into our country — has become the new bete noir of the Left, with (big surprise here) the ACLU taking point.
The ACLU is so concerned about the Minutemen violating the rights of illegal aliens (operating under the unique legal theory that aliens have the right to enter the United States whenever they want, wherever they want, without being hassled by border enforcement officials, nosey volunteers, or the owners of the land they pass through) that they’ve dispatched their own elite cadre of volunteers to keep an eye on the Minutement and make sure no laws are broken.
Or, rather, nobody besides them breaks the law.
Now, after seeing those photos, you’d think that the ACLU volunteers are too mellowed out to really cause much trouble. I know I thought so. But we were wrong.
I’m trying to wrap my head around the ACLU’s logic here, but I’m drawing a blank. Maybe they interpret the “American” in their name to mean the entire hemisphere, and not just this country…

(My thanks to Discarded Lies, where I first noticed this.)
Here’s your problem: assuming there is Logic involved in the ALCU.
Actions like these are sure to bring the left closer into the mainstream beliefs of the rest of the country! /sarcasm.
You’d think they want to become an extinct party. Nothing gets my blood boiling more than illegal immigration. There is no need for these criminals.
I have a question and this is not sarcasm, I really want to know. Who is the head of the ACLU, and why don’t they personally take heat from anyone? Whenever we talk about these things we blame the ACLU as if it’s this big unaccountable blob we have to deal with. Someone has to be in charge.
If I don’t like the pothole in my street I go to the Mayor if the Street department head doesn’t react. If I don’t think the law is being followed concerning child offender laws I ultimately contact the Governor. Who decided it was worthy of their efforts to watch the watchers? Every organization has a head, who is the head of the ACLU and why aren’t his feet being held to the fire?
Heat needs to be brought down on this group and it has to start with the ones making these decisions! We need to quit treating this group, or I should say quit allowing them to be using this holier than thou additude and make them accountable.
The ACLU is nothing more than schill for the wacked out liberal agenda.
But I do wish our government would work a little harder at controlling the border, if they did that, there would be no need for the minutemen.
Oh no – they were smoking pot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get the Christian Taliban! This must be stopped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ACLU = Addicts Casually Lighting Up
While I am no fan of the ACLU, and
I support the work of the Minute Man
Project, this could simply be a rolled
tobaco cigarette. Many of my friends
roll their own cigarettes, because it’s cheaper and you can control the amount of tobacco you inhale.
Yeah, it might be rolled tobacco! Or maybe its just dried banana peels!
Here’s the logic, kids.
Grass: GOOD.
Armed, racist buttheads spoiling to bust a cap in the brown ass of somebody trying to feed his or her kids: BAD.
Can you dig that, daddio?
there you have it. the attempt to end the argument when you have nothing else to use: play the race card. People (and I don’t think they are armed) volunteering their services to protect the border from criminals are racist.
Can you dig that, idiot?
Grass: Illegal
Sneaking across the US border: Illegal
Long organized walks with cell phones and binoculars: Protected by the US Constitution
Trollee, regardless of your personal opinion towards marijuana, it is still an illegal substance.
Anti-Minutemen take issue with law-abiding US citizens carrying legal firearms, but attempt to obfuscate and misdirect attention when illegal drugs are being consumed by the ACLU boots-on-the-ground.
The issue isn’t so much the MJ smoking by the ACLU bunch for me (although it is illegal), but I am bothered by the fact that they want to protect somebody’s “right” to enter the country illegally, and many of the people doing so are running various types of drugs, which are illegal.
I think it’s time for a spellchecker for this blog.
I agree the little rolled up joints could be nothing more than homemade cigs. What I take issue with is these people are helping illegals become illegal. Isn’t that a crime?
Mike:
Nothing gets my blood boiling more than illegal immigration.
What has lead you to feel so strongly about this issue?
There is no need for these criminals.
Are you talking about all illegal immigrants, or a certain group? Who are you talking about. Because if you mean Mexican/Central American immigrants then you might have to think again, since they are hired by American companies all the time. Growers, construction companies, landscapers, restaurants, etc hire them, so there must be some kind of need.

I agree that if things were handled better by our govt the minutemen probably wouldnt be out there doing this.
Skybird:
You’re always so insightful and rational.
What has lead you to feel so strongly about this issue?
Because it undermines the basic tenets of this country. There are means of entering legally which many immigrants follow. Those entering illegally are criminals from the moment they set foot in this country and we don’t need them! It also undermines the security of our nation, but we can argue that in another thread. As for you other point:
Who are you talking about. Because if you mean Mexican/Central American immigrants then you might have to think again, since they are hired by American companies all the time. Growers, construction companies, landscapers, restaurants, etc hire them, so there must be some kind of need.
Those needs should be filled with legal immigrants or Americans. Those who hire these criminals are also breaking the law, pure and simple. All I’m asking for is for those in law enforcement and our government representatives at every level to start enforcing these immigration laws that are on the books, is that so hard to understand?
Areaman-one thing studies show is that the higher the concentration of illegals in a given area the more wages are supressed. Illegal immigration hurts everyone.
Also, dealing with the illegal immigration problem is more than just border enforcement, the government also needs to better hold accountable those people who knowingly hire illegals, and to hold accountable those who sell false documents to illegals.
Basically this issue is the big elephant in the dining room that neither party wants to touch, which is why the minutemen have decided to do the one thing they can do, which is prevent the illegals from entering.
Mike:

I think that it undermines our immigration laws more than it does the basic tenets of the US. Those were all about freedom, and the pursuit of happiness, freedom or religion and speech, etc.
Where are your ancestors from? Mine are mostly from Europe, and they all came here looking for work as well. I understand that immigration has to be controlled, but I disagree with talking about migrants as if they are terrible criminals. Alot of them just want to work, and survive.
Those entering illegally are criminals from the moment they set foot in this country and we don’t need them!
Tell that to all the businesses in California that hire them, and the people that buy their products.
Those needs should be filled with legal immigrants or Americans. Those who hire these criminals are also breaking the law, pure and simple.
So what do we say or do to restaurants, growers, etc that hire those people? How should they be dealt with?
All I’m asking for is for those in law enforcement and our government representatives at every level to start enforcing these immigration laws that are on the books, is that so hard to understand?
I know where you’re coming from. I know what the laws are. Whats interesting to me is that there are many people who are breaking them on both sides of the fence here. So maybe the laws need some adjustments. Maybe there could be some solution in the middle that controls the labor flow.
Just Me:
Areaman-one thing studies show is that the higher the concentration of illegals in a given area the more wages are supressed. Illegal immigration hurts everyone.
Yes. Thats the whole supply/demand thing. The cheaper labor force drives down wages. The illegal workers are basically exploited, American workers lose jobs, and employers make a little more money.
Also, dealing with the illegal immigration problem is more than just border enforcement, the government also needs to better hold accountable those people who knowingly hire illegals, and to hold accountable those who sell false documents to illegals.
Very true. Here’s a question: What if the number of companies and businesses that hire illegals is really high? Do you punish all of them? How do you start? How will that affect local or state economies???
Basically this issue is the big elephant in the dining room that neither party wants to touch, which is why the minutemen have decided to do the one thing they can do, which is prevent the illegals from entering.
It definitely needs to be dealt with. The minutemen arent really doing much good, since they are addressing the results of all this. People are coming here because there is a demand for their labor, because there is incentive. Also, their own countries economies are often in really bad shape.
Angry people with guns on our borders dont really address any of that. The basic causes still exist.
areaman, are you for real? No one is enforcing the immigration laws. That’s the problem, that’s why volunteers are taking it upon themselves to patrol our border. You have to prosecute both the criminals entering the country illegally and those hiring them. Right now it’s not the laws that are the problem it’s the enforcement. There is no middle ground when you have local governments that are sympathetic to the crimaliens and instruct their police officers not to cooperate with the INS.
I am not willing to accept anything other than complete enforcement of the laws of this country and that goes for those entering illegally and those hiring them. The businesses in SoCal will have to either hire legal workers, move, change businesses, or face prosecution.
The problem is not so much that anyone wants to deprive anyone else of a chance to earn money to feed their kids. The problem is that they are “undocumented” and we have no control over WHO is entering or how many. Some of them are criminals. And it does keep wages down in the immediate areas. Why the heck would someone hire a dishwasher or a construction laborer at a legal wage limit when they can get someone to work for a dollar an hour less? In how many instances are these people paying out cash because the workers are illegal and none of the money goes into our tax system? No …. some people would rather holler that the rich aren’t paying enough instead of addressing such an obvious abuse.
Fox has no interest in providing an opportunity rich environment for his people as long as we’re doing it. You don’t see Mexicans scrambling across the southern border to Guatemala for work, do you?
We want to “control” the border, not close it.
And then we have people like Don myers putting words in our mouths and assuming things that aren’t true.
Jay…excellent thread, excellent roundup of articles there from bloggers…I’m linking and writing about this, too (another hour or so). I thank you for these resources.
Well, now having a moment to read through the thread (half-way done), I see that the ACLU trolls are showing up in flea-infesting numbers.
Never fails: like fruitbats to the mango, moonbats come to Wizbang.
For every Mike, FloridaOyster and me, there are millions more of similar perspective and opinions.
We can’t make “laws change” in other countries without military force, for the most part (we can use influence, economics, and do, but when making demands for changes within other countries as to their laws, governments, etc., that’s usually accompanied by threat or presence of military force).
The very idea that we as a country (the U.S.) ought not enforce our laws or ought to allow our laws to flex if enforced at all because there are problems with laws elsewhere is avoiding the problem of illegal immigration in any realistic sense.
It suggests to my read that it’s more of that dialogue along the lines that “Americans employ illegal immigrants, therefore America is to blame for illegal immigration (and not the illegal immigrants violating the laws)”.
It’s the “blame the victim” mentality. Yes, people IN this country who employ illegal immigrants are breaking the laws. Many of them represent multi-generational businesses that began with illegal immigration and have prospered because of illegal immigration, an entire network that makes illegal immigration possible.
That’s a problem of huge proportions, yes, but it isn’t without solution, isn’t impossible to change and resolve. It’s just difficult to accomplish.
However, those who immigrate illegally are breaking the laws of the country. They’re indicating that they are not the persons of good character that the country needs for new citizens, who should even be citizens unless there’s that issue of political asylum involved (which many from China and elsewhere use dishonestly, to be frank).
There’s a thing called personal responsibility. If someone makes you an offer that you know is illegal, and you accept that offer, you’re doing so with acceptance and mutuality in that illegal activity. Just because someone else is violating laws does not mean it’s alright for anyone else to do so. Meaning, every individual is evaluated (should be) based upon their individual behavior. You violate the laws, you’re responsible.
Meaning, illegal immigration is done by illegal immigrants. It’s a violation of our laws and insulting to our nation’s economy and to others who observe immigration laws and do it the correct and lawful way. Illegal immigration drives wages and living conditions down, it costs existing taxpayers a huge amount of money and all that earning that illegal immigrants accomplish is far offset by the huge expenses they charge the country while here.
Well then KKK supporters, when is the Minuteman project going to South Boston and NYC to report on the hundreds of thousands of overstayers? Never? Oh I understand now. It depends on what color the illegals are.
bullshit trollee! You short-sighted twit. You and your ilk are the only ones concerned with color. We have discussed on this website in a prior post about illegal Irish immigrants taking construction jobs and we expressed the same outrage. Go play the race card somewhere else.
Stop foaming at the mouth and just say when the Minuterednecks will be heading for South Boston.
