How many times does the President rescue a secret service agent?
SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) – President Bush stepped into the middle of a confrontation and pulled his lead Secret Service agent away from Chilean security officials who barred his bodyguards from entering an elegant dinner for 21 world leaders Saturday night.
Several Chilean and American agents got into a pushing and shoving match outside the cultural center where the dinner was held. The incident happened after Bush and his wife, Laura, had just posed for pictures on a red carpet with the host of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, Chilean President Ricardo Lagos and his wife, Luisa Duran.
As Bush stepped inside, Chilean agents closed ranks at the door, blocking the president’s agents from following. Stopping for more pictures, Bush noticed the fracas and turned back. He reached through the dispute and pulled his agent from the scrum and into the building.
The president, looking irritated, straightened his shirt cuffs as he went into the dinner. The incident was shown on APEC television.
“Chilean security tried to stop the president’s Secret Service from accompanying him,” said White House deputy press secretary Claire Buchan. “He told them they were with him and the issue was resolved.”
For the record, W was wrong. His job was to keep walking. But it is nice to have a real man in the Whitehouse.
How does Bush compare to Kerry? Oh Yeah.
Update- My Thoughts: After reviewing the video and reading the accounts, W was very “wrong” to go back. He had the rest of his security detail and there was no way of knowing how the situation would play out. He is in a foreign country with unknown people all around. If it looks like someone is purposely trying to either create a distraction or separate the President from his security that is a major danger signal.
The rules say the remainder of his security detail tighten up and they move and move fast. The LAST thing that should be done is go backwards. This picture makes the point why W should not have gone back into the crowd. Civilians, a unruly crowd, handguns and the President don’t mix.
Presidents routinely flout their Secret Service details and sneak around. But they rely on security via obscurity. Here he had no such obscurity. Lastly I’ll remind you of the sheer raw hatred many hold for this man. And DUH, he is a President at war.
I posted this under humor because, last night, I just found it funny and I even dubbed him a S-T-U-D for his performance. After seeing it and pondering it, somehow it ain’t so funny. I’m still glad we have a President who will take action like this but I do hope in hindsight he realizes it was not the right thing to do. Knowing Bush, he knows it was “wrong” but he’d do it again. Yeah, that’s one of the reasons he won.
