Is it any wonder Bush has declined invitations to the annual NAACP convention?
PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (AP) — NAACP chairman Julian Bond urged members of the nation’s oldest civil rights organization to increase voter turnout to oust President Bush, and condemned the administration’s policies on education, the economy and the war in Iraq.
“They preach racial neutrality and practice racial division,” Bond said Sunday night in the 95th annual convention’s keynote address. “They’ve tried to patch the leaky economy and every other domestic problem with duct tape and plastic sheets. They write a new constitution of Iraq and they ignore the Constitution here at home.”Of course this follows his remarks last month:
In remarks to hundreds of cheering liberal activists Wednesday, NAACP Chairman Julian Bond singled out Republicans as enemies of black Americans and compared conservatives to the terrorist Taliban who once ruled Afghanistan.
“Their idea of equal rights is the American flag and the Confederate swastika flying side by side,” Bond told a cheering audience. “They’ve written a new constitution for Iraq and ignore the Constitution here at home. They draw their most rabid supporters from the Taliban wing of American politics. Now they want to write bigotry back into the Constitution.”Here’s a kicker from The Philadelphia Daily News, The “non-partisan” NAACP convention will be showing Fahrenheit 9/11 for free tomorrow.
The NAACP is “non-partisan” just like moonbats way out to the left of Dennis Kucinich are “centrist.”
And the Big Media “journalists” let ’em get away with it because they, too, are “non-partisan” “centrists.”

These times are truely getting ugly. Please don’t think that this is indicative of the thinking of all African-Americans. At least I try to have an open mind and don’t equate other Americans to terrorist organizations.
The NAACP was once in the hands of those who were trying to do a good thing. Now, after reading these words, it seems as if the leadership is trying to create a rift instead of togetherness. I guess they have yet to learn that words of hate and discontent will never advance any cause.
Now, I have to go argue with another radical thinking liberal on another blog who thinks we in the military should not do our jobs- basically mutiny against our leaders. I don’t think so.
I don’t think ignoring the convention was a good idea from an image standpoint. However, Bush may have some serious issues with the NAACP that aren’t about racism. Bill Cosby, a black man himself, has disagreed with them on several occasions. The press and the NAACP blew this out of proportion
I’m under no illusion that the NAACP represents all (or even a majority) of African-Americans. Frankly I think it’s ridiculous to suggest that African-Americans could be pigeon holed like that – it’s so marginalizing…
Bush did use them – only going during an election year, and then snubbing them for the next three. Poor strategery. However, I want to see if Kerry goes back next year.
The NAACP is a defunct organization that has marginalized itself with its extreme leftist viewpoints and leaders and stupid assinine and ridiculous statements such as the ones equating a party in the United States with a terrorist organization.
However, when you snub such idiots, they have huge gaping mouths. They will cry and whine until the sacred cows of allah come home, and destroy any minimal presence that the GOP had in the African American community.
I also love it how minority-activist groups assume the positions of other minorities. It’s not like Bush is trying to put that 3/5 of a person thing back into the constitution. He is offending homosexual persons, not African Americans. Is the NAACP trying to make a “what’s next” argument? if so, he needs to take a public speaking course, and learn how to put sentences together. Just really stupid statements by the NAACP.
Can someone tell Julian Bond that there’s no such thing as “the Confederate Swastika”? The man’s mangling symbols so badly he’s going to injure himself.
Kevin, I am not suggesting that. You and others here recognize the difference, some may not. It has happened before.
Understood SGT. Robb. Just wanted to go on record as supporting your take on it. Thing is I meet Mfume way back and a nicer guy you’d never meet. I really thought he could make the NAACP relevant again, but with Bond in the mix it doesn’t seem likely.
I was just reading about these very statements by Bond, and more (HERE) and I note that Bond is identified as someone who isn’t affiliated with any religious principles, and, appears to have had his opinions and perspectives shaped and influenced by others (he explains that, that link/article I provided). So, he’s apparently among the left who reason by popular opinion: if it’s popular, it’s ‘right’.
I agree with a few of the people quoted in that article (link), that NAACP is today moved over into areas of political action first (the leftwing kind) and then fills in the blanks afterward, thus reducing the present day NAACP to a political action movement and not one based upon the principles upon which it was founded, what the founding purpose of the group was set out to be.
So, even there (NAACP), it’s apparent that pressure from a left wing influence has robbed the group of moral and ethical motivation, energy even. It’s become another left wing ‘rant’ group instead.
I’m puzzled, however, why it is that the major news networks ONLY showed film footage of Bond and Bond’s statements, while ignoring the other comments by more religious and community involved leaders/advisors in the NAACP. And why they aren’t applying more pressure to people like Bond.
