Did Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Come in Third?

According to the UK Telegraph, leaked election results, Ahmadinejad actually came in third place (emphasis mine).

Supporters had been due to turn out en masse in Tehran on Monday afternoon, despite government warnings to stay off the streets.

But this morning, a statement on Mr Mousavi's campaign website announced that the demonstration had been postponed - although it said Mr Mousavi would go to the site to ensure any supporters who showed up remained calm.

Mr Mousavi's wife and co-campaigner, Zahra Ranavard, was reported as warning that riot squads would be equipped with live ammunition, raising the prospect of serious bloodshed.

Iran's Interior Ministry said Mr Mousavi would be responsible for any consequences if he went ahead with the protest.

Mr Mousavi's cancellation of the protest came as sporadic disturbances continued around the Iranian capital, and reports circulated of leaked interior ministry statistics showing him as the clear victor in last Friday's polls.

The statistics, circulated on Iranian blogs and websites, claimed Mr Mousavi had won 19.1 million votes while Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had won only 5.7 million.

The two other candidates, reformist Mehdi Karoubi and hardliner Mohsen Rezai, won 13.4 million and 3.7 million respectively. The authenticity of the leaked figures could not be confirmed.

This is in contrast to a Washington Post article that says Ahmadinejad's election was legitimate because it reflected a poll the Post conducted several weeks before the election.

Obama's Economic House of Cards is Collapsing

My (Kim Priestap's) most recent American Issues Project column was posted on Friday. In it I describe how Obama's economic house of cards is collapsing down around him and us. Here's a portion:

The Obama Administration's economic house of cards is trembling and on the verge of collapse. This is not a surprise to those who paid attention to the sloppy workmanship that went into it. Nonetheless, the American people fell in love and bought the house sight unseen. Now, however, it has become apparent that it is a disappointment. Rather than purchasing a structure based upon sound design and construction, Americans got one that was thrown together without any regard to safety, detail, or craftsmanship. In spite of all this, President Obama told us we needed the house immediately and that there was no time to inspect its construction or verify that the foundation was sound or that its electrical and plumbing systems were in good working order. Instead, he insisted we had to move in immediately or dire consequences would follow. Five months later, it is clear that our house is falling apart. Obama and his administration, however, are going to great lengths to convince the American people that the problems with his economic house of cards are just cosmetic and easily remedied with a new coat of paint and a few extra nails. But the shoddy construction and design flaws have become obvious to everyone who is paying attention.

Barack Obama's $787 billion stimulus plan is failing. The bill the president said would stimulate economic growth is actually decelerating the economy because there very little stimulus in the stimulus bill. Instead, the majority of the spending in the bill is directed toward accountability, education, aid to state and local governments, health care, energy programs, and food banks and other community organizations. As a result, 1.6 million jobs have been lost since president Obama's stimulus bill passed. Oddly, though, he keeps repeating the claim that he "saved or created" 150,000 jobs, a number that is unconfirmed and unconfirmable because the US Department of Labor does not keep records of "saved" jobs. So where is Obama getting this number? Jared Bernstein, economic advisor to Vice President Biden, said he the figure was an estimate based upon what jobs would have been lost if the bill was not passed. In other words, the number was made up out of whole cloth. The lack of factual support, however, does not stop the president from continuing to repeat his claim. In fact, he is doubling down and saying he will "ramp up" the stimulus so as to save another 600,000 jobs this summer. Again, these numbers will be impossible to confirm.

The president told the American people that his stimulus bill would hold the unemployment rate at 8 percent. Without the bill, he said the unemployment rate would top out at 9 percent. Today our unemployment rate is at 9.4 percent, which is a significantly steeper rate than originally projected. Many economists and analysts are now predicting it will hit double digits by the end of the year. Mr. Bernstein is trying to shift the blame for the 9.4 percent unemployment rate on former president Bush, saying the unexpectedly high rate is due to the economic figures from last year's 4th quarter. As the saying goes, only a poor carpenter blames his tools.

Wizbang Status Update

Greetings all. Sorry for the delay in returning to normal service. Wizbang (all sites) should be back up running at full steam Monday morning.

Monday afternoon I will export all the content (posts and comments) from this backup site and import it to Wizbang. That will ensure that everything from the weekend is published on the new server. The winners for the Caption Contest will be announced late Monday evening.

We'll be on a new server in the morning will all the data from Thursday (and before) in place. It's been a long process, hampered by the fact I was on a plane all day Friday.

Monday morning I'll change the DNS so you reach the main Wizbang site. I'll also redirect this site to the Wizbang server IP address so you can reach us if the DNS server propagation hasn't reached you...

I know some of you will miss the spartan look here, but I'm working on cleaning up the old template code and design, and adding a more open comment registration system, just like we have here. It's not easy with 5 years of material to reprocess....

CBS News calls Ahmadinejad Iran's George W. Bush

This is an outrage! CBS has a piece on their website that is so out of line it's one of the most agregious and disgusting examples of media malpractice I think I have ever seen. CBS News has this headline over the New Republic's article about Iran's election debacle: "Meet Iran's George W. Bush." Thanks to Jim Hoft at Gateway Pundit for not just bringing this to me but for capturing the screen cap so CBS can't take it down without people seeing their propaganda and lies in full color:

Ahmadinejad is an evil dictator who is killing his own citizens in the streets because they are expressing their outrage at how he rigged the election through massive voter fraud. This creep also has his goons beat women in public for showing their hair. He bans satallite television. He has young girls executed when it was they who were raped. Ahmandinejad has the soul of the devil, and CBS calls him Iran's George W. Bush. Disgraceful!

This is supposed to be a legitimate news organization but they've proven themselves to be nothing but a black hole in which truth, fairness, and decency are sucked in to never be seen or heard from again. No wonder mainstream media news outlets, especially CBS, are losing viewers, readers, and listeners when they are incapable of reporting anything but lies like this.

The Fraudulent Iranian Election

The Iranian election is dominating the news today and there are some good videos available over at Michael Totten's site. Also, to his credit, Andrew Sullivan has done a nice job of covering the elections. He along with Hugh Hewitt have noted the lack of MSM coverage this weekend. One interesting comment from Totten and Sullivan:

Andrew Sullivan writes: "The last time a news event gave me chills like this was the Soviet coup. It ended the regime." Yes, it did.

You know what this reminds me (Totten) of? The convulsion that shook Ramadi, the capital of Anbar Province, Iraq.

As Ben Smith observes, the White House nonsense about Obama's speech influencing the elections has just been mugged by reality:

The notion of an "Obama effect" sweeping the Middle East appeared to collide with the realities of the Islamic Republic of Iran Saturday, as the country's confrontational, anti-American president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, celebrated a landslide victory in Friday's election amid wide doubts about the honesty of the official vote count

Jennifer Rubin says:

The problem with claiming credit for events in other countries is that when things go poorly people will interpret it as a personal rebuke. You can't have it both ways. And the problem with pretending that theocratic thugs are conducting a "real" elections is that when they prove to be not so "real" you look foolish for having cheered from the sidelines. Perhaps a less egocentric foreign policy is in order.

Predictably, many of the experts" are stunned by the level of fraud in the election. While it may be surprising to witness the reaction of Iranians to the fraudulent election, the fraud itself is not news. What else should be expected from The Little Kidnapper? John Podhoretz lays out the challenge for President Obama:

If this is Tiananmen II, and the regime crushes it, there will be no easy approach to regime change. And there will be no pretending any longer that Iran's regime isn't a unified, hardline, irridentist, and enormously dangerous one.

The White House is treading water on the crisis for now. Unlike his previous foreign policies ventures, when the President has attempted to have it both ways by utilizing soaring rhetoric that was absent any substance, the Iranian election crisis will be seen as a watershed moment in his presidency. The issues at stake are Middle East democracy, a nuclear Iran, an imminent attack by Israel and, of course, the Left's favorite cause (when it fits the narrative)...human rights. The clumsy mullahs have, if nothing else, painted the President into a corner with this sham election. He will have to make some real foreign policy decisions.

Barack Obama Alienating Allies

One of the biggest criticisms the Democrats had of former President George W. Bush was that he alienated the rest of the world by acting unilaterally on world issues. Barack Obama has gone on an apology tour around the world begging the world for forgiveness for America's arrogance.

So what's the deal with Barack Obama going behind Britain's back and negotiating unilaterally with Bermuda, a UK colony, to settle four Uighurs there? The British government had the right to know and the US government had the obligation to tell them what they were doing. The arrogance and disrespect toward Britain and its sovereignty is mind blowing.

Imagine if the tables were turned and the British placed terrorists on the US Virgin Islands without the US government's knowledge. Obama would be furious and would take Brown to task for acting so disrespectfully.

The Obama administration was quick with an excuse:

Now a senior US official has told the BBC it was a deliberate decision not to consult London on the resettlement, after other countries came under pressure from China not to accept the Uighurs.

In a highly unusual move, a senior US official said Washington opted to keep details of the deal from London until the last minute to enable Britain to deny all knowledge of the deal and thus avoid China's anger, says the BBC's Washington correspondent Kim Ghattas.

Isn't that special.

The Road to Single Payer Health Care Begins with Public Option Deception

President Obama said he didn't want to force everyone onto a single payer health care plan. He said over and over again during the campaign that if you were happy with your private insurance that you could keep it but a public option would be available. He made the same claim again just the other day in Green Bay, but this time he said that the public option was designed to keep the private insurance companies "honest" by offering them competition. President Obama has no business accusing the the insurance companies of being dishonest when he and the other single payer supporters are the folks trying to dupe the American people about their plans to destroy the private insurance industry. Verum Serum has the proof (Hat tip: Hot Air):

Update: Some may welcome a single payer health care system thinking it is superior to private insurance, but that is not the case, particularly for women. Jim Hoft examined how socialized medicine fails women with breast cancer. In the UK, the breast cancer rate has sky rocketed under government run health care.

Currently the United States leads the world in treating breast cancer. Women with breast cancer have a 14 percent higher survival rate in the United States than in Europe. Breast cancer mortality is 52 percent higher in Germany than in the United States, and 88 percent higher in the United Kingdom. Breast cancer mortality is also 9 percent higher in Canada than in the US. Less than 25 percent of U.S. women die from breast cancer. In Britain, it's 46 percent; France, 35 percent; Germany, 31 percent; Canada, 28 percent; Australia, 28 percent, and New Zealand, 46 percent. The European Network of Cancer Registries reported:

Breast cancer is also the most common cancer in females in Europe. It is estimated that in the year 2000 there were 350,000 new breast cancer cases in Europe, while the number of deaths from breast cancer was estimated at 130,000. Breast cancer is responsible for 26.5 percent of all new cancer cases among women in Europe, and 17.5 percent of cancer deaths.

In Britain, where they enjoy socialized medicine, breast cancer rates have soared by more than 80 percent in the past 30 years under their system. A big reason for this is early diagnosis. Nine of 10 middle-aged American women (89 percent) have had a mammogram, compared to less than three-fourths of Canadians (72 percent). Women who develop breast cancer in Europe are four times more likely to be diagnosed when the tumor has spread and survival is less likely than are women in the US.

The BBC reported that US women were more likely to survive breast cancer than their European counterparts because they are diagnosed earlier, research finds. The five year survival rate in the US was 89 percent compared to 79 percent in Europe. One reason was that 41 percent of the US cases were diagnosed at an early stage, compared to just 29 percent in Europe and this greatly improved the survival rate.

This should frighten American women. They are less likely to survive breast cancer under government run health care.

Late Thoughts On Letterman/Palin

As you've probably noticed, Wizbang has been down for a few days.

That said, this piece, concerning David Letterman's comments on Governor Sarah Palin and her 14 year old daughter, Willow, may seem a bit dated. However, it's just a bit too bizarre to not comment about it.

And if you've gone to the funnyman's website to look up the Palin "Top Ten" for yourself and found it is not listed nor is it able to be found within the archives, it's not just you. For some odd reason, it has been deleted from the site.

If you hadn't heard his outrageously jocose "Top-Ten list" concerning Gov. Palin's trip to New York City, then here is a transcript for you:

Obama And Democrats Are Avoiding The Difficult Decisions

Arthur Laffer had an excellent piece in the WSJ a few days ago that laid out the challenges facing Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke. The gist of Laffer's message is that there are no easy answers for Fed policy makers in their attempt to blunt the effects of a severe economic contraction. Characterizing the Fed's options, Laffer notes that the Fed should, in the interests of long term economic prospects, reduce the recent historic surge money supply:

...a rapid contraction of the monetary base as I propose would cause a contraction in bank lending, or at best limited expansion. This is exactly what happened in 2000 and 2001 when the Fed contracted the monetary base the last time. The economy quickly dipped into recession. While the short-term pain of a deepened recession is quite sharp, the long-term consequences of double-digit inflation are devastating. For Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke it's a Hobson's choice. For me the issue is how to protect assets for my grandchildren.

Does this advice sound familiar? It should because it's exactly what President Reagan did when he came into to office in 1981. Reagan allowed then Fed Chairman Volcker to contract the money supply because he knew that long term inflation would defeat his goals of increased economic growth. Herein lies the delimma and the present day denial of Congressional Democrats and President Obama. Neither are willing to make the courageous choice Reagan made (and courageous it was because it cost him dearly in the 1982 mid term elections) to ensure future growth. Rather, the Democrats seek short term political gain and tell voters not to worry about (and simply ignore) the future. Yet to be revealed is a coherent defense of Obama's spending policies as they relate to future inflation and economic growth.

As yesterday's Rassmusen polls indicate, voters understand this (at least intuitively). There is political traction to be had in the spending and inflation issue and the pushback against the Tea Party movement is a tacit admission of such by the Left. Voters that pay taxes, concerned about their future financial security, are looking for leadership similar to Reagan's. They understand difficult choices and they understand near term pain and sacrifice. What they despise is rhetoric masquerading as leadership and political expediency that trumps fiscal responsibility.

Is The Worm Turning?

More often than not news organizations use polls to manufacture stories, particularly when the polls seem to confirm the cognoscenti's predisposition. Two recent Rasmussen polls are running against the tide of elite media opinion on the issue of government spending. One poll confirms the concerns voiced months ago during the Tea Party protests against excessive government spending:

Most voters (53%) believe increases in government spending hurt the economy, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.

...Voters are much more supportive of cuts in government spending as opposed to increases. Almost half of voters (46%) think decreases in government spending help the economy, while 27% say they hurt it.

Another poll narrows these concerns to the question of the efficacy (or lack of) of the Stimulus Legislation:

Forty-five percent (45%) of Americans say the rest of the new government spending authorized in the $787-billion economic stimulus plan should now be canceled. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that just 36% disagree and 20% are not sure.

As Glenn Reynolds's noted, it's becoming a bit more than obvious that this issue is getting under the Democrat's skin because they have doubled down on the "It's Bush's fault" argument. That phenomenon was reflected in the comments to my post yesterday. Voters, well attuned to the concept of credit risk, are apparently paying attention to record government borrowing, government spending and rising interest rates. It's not rocket science, the Obama administration just wants us to think it is.

About Thursday...

As you can see since you are here, we've had a major site meltdown. Everything is fully backed up, but restoring our server is taking some time. We'll be here until at least mid-day Friday. I've redirected the main Wizbang site, but the other sites will be unreachable until I've restored everything.

Sorry for the inconvience. The caption contest has started here, and normal posting may resume under a single login for all authors shortly...
