"Oh, now here we go," you're thinking, "Baron's finally crossed the line between your regular wingnut crank and cartoonish super-villainy wingnut."
Ooh, a Meat Puppets song. From Too High To Die. Sweet.
Okay, focus. Contrary to what you're thinking, the provocative title of this ditty has nothing to do with Adolf Hitler's rather well documented authoritarian bent or prejudices. Nay, I refer to the fact that apparently enough people found Hitler to be a brilliant, captivating orator that he ended up in power when he was in actually a rather dim bulb who would lead his country to utter ruin. What's the word I'm looking for here...hyperbole?
Napoleon would be a more apt metaphor, perhaps. What got me thinking about it is how much Obama and Pelosi's push to sign any bill with "health" and "reform" in the title remind me of the decision to invade Russia/USSR. I've just never seen any footage of tingly-legged French soldiers listening to Napoleon delivering a firebrand oration. What can I say? Hitler's what I know. The History Channel has taught me nothing of Napoleon - and we don't teach France in Texas public schools.
Whenever you hear someone say, "The National Socialist Workers Party - i.e. Nazis - could have won WWII if..." know full well the next thing out of their mouth is irrelevant. The only way the Nazis could have possibly won is if Hitler died the day after they took France. Actually, when they invaded France because his nincompoopery allowed 300,000+ soldiers to escape at Dunkirk. As horrible it is that he rose to power we should thank the Lord for Hitler's tactical and strategic numbskullery. And syphilis.
The ultimate stupidity was failing to subdue Great Britain before opening a second front against the USSR. War with the USSR was inevitable; even though there's not much functional difference between them, fascists and commies hate each other. Like the People's Front of Judea and the Judean People's Front. Russia has always been the impossible dream for Western European. Crushing, painful retreat and defeat; broken, miserable, frostbitten suffering in pursuit of an unachievable victory.
You see where I'm going. Obama is leading the Democrats on a death march towards a victory that will remain just over the horizon. Considering the path he has chosen you've got to give him credit for getting this close. If he can get a dozen more Dems out of the trench and into the crossfire plus a little procedural three card monty he might actually end up with something to sign. If not, the Dems will have been led to slaughter for nothing and Obama exposed as the cynical, lying, everything-that's-wrong-with-Washington left-wing ideologue he's always been.
As horrified as I am that we're this close to seeing this monstrosity foisted upon us, I can only marvel at how ineptly Obama has handled the process. Health care reform should have been a slam dunk. It is popular in the abstract. There are Republicans willing to play ball. A semi-competent executive should have had this bill signed and in his pocket by July.
Mistake one was a trillion dollar stimulus spendathon that made a mockery of any notion Obama would usher in a post-partisan era. Having failed to subdue unemployment, Obama opened a second front on health care reform. Promptly sitting on his hands while Reid and Pelosi once again cooked up the most poisonous, partisan bills possible.
Seriously, it's like they took the Republican Party Platform on health care and deliberately went through line by line to ensure they were doing the exact opposite of every single point.
Not at all what you would expect from a super genius. A little moderation, some outreach, tact, gravitas and Obama would have the health care skin on the wall - free to pursue amnesty for illegal aliens or whatever abomination he has in store for us next.
Anyway, I just keep picturing the Russian winter. Miserably slogging along; so cold you can slice meat off a walking draft horse. It can't feel the cut and the wound freezes instantly. When you get home you must immediately turn around and try to repel the hoard that just drove you home in defeat.
What would have happened if the Nazis took Stalingrad? Come spring, before they were resupplied or relieved, they would have been set upon and annihilated by the Soviet army. Even in victory, defeat.
So it is with health care. Even if they drag this stinking corpse across the finish line there are states and individuals lining up to counter-attack. It will be with them far past November's elections and even 2012.

Spider Robinson once wrote a story about an alien seeking absolution for his crimes. Seems the alien was preparing our world (the humans) for harvesting, but in order to do that, you've got to get the animals healthy. The best way to do that was by raising technology levels, which increased lifespans through means medical and otherwise. (Labor saving devices, anyone?) And the best way to raise technology levels quickly is through war.
To make a short story shorter - the alien was Hitler, (helluva makeup job, apparently) and the main problem the alien had was making sure the Germans lost through a LOT of bad decisions, but not quickly enough that nuclear power wasn't developed. Apparently we were supposed to BBQ ourselves in WW3... which failed to come off on schedule.
And no, Steve Green, I'm not suggesting Obama's an alien. You, on the other hand....
Though come to think of it - if you were of an alien race determined to keep mankind stuck on the planet (for whatever reason) how would you make sure we could never leave? By collapsing the economy once it gets rich enough to afford development of space travel?
Hmm....

To me it's the comparison of the pig and the python.
The python swallows the pig, then realizes that what it thought was a pig is actually a hippopotamus.
(it was hubris that made the python think a hippo was a pig in the first place)
Python still swallows the hippo and the hippo splits the python's skin.

Yeah, and that's sad. In conventional Anglosphere history, Bonaparte is a bit of a caricature. Just another looney dictator and wannabe world conqueror. Why study him? After all, he lost, and the Anglos are the ones who beat him. Well, us and General Winter.
In actuality, Napoleon was an excellent politician and a brilliant military commander. Far more of both than the Bohemian corporal, whose chief claim to infamy is that he was a decent orator and commanded a slightly larger thug-army than anybody else in Weimar Germany.
Another one who gets an unjustifiedly bad rap from history is the actual creator of the modern Democrat philosophy: Benito Mussolini. Fascist Italy is generally mocked in Western history -- a weak-sister ally of Nazi Germany, least successful of the Axis Powers in its wartime endeavors, first of the Axis to surrender to the Allies. But politically, Mussolini was the elder brother -- National Socialism was patterned after Mussolini's Fascism, and Fascism was actually pretty successful at re-energizing Italian society during the 1930s. It couldn't last, of course, and Mussolini's attempt to recreate the Roman Empire with a nation that wasn't up to conquering anymore just made it fall apart that much faster. Still, given his status as the creator of Fascism (and therefore the ultimate arbiter of what fascism is), Mussolini is a better standard of comparison for Democrat-Socialism than Nazism is.

One other thing, I just noticed this line: Whenever you hear someone say, "The National Socialist Workers Party - i.e. Nazis - could have won WWII if..." know full well the next thing out of their mouth is irrelevant.
Not always. Or rather, not necessarily. It depends on how you define "win." If by "win" you mean "conquer all its enemies," then no, Nazi Germany could never have won the war it had started. But if you mean something more like "reach a negotiated peace that left it in control of the countries it had already conquered," why then, victory for Germany was a very real possibility prior to Operation Barbarossa. For all practical purposes, Great Britain was already beaten in spring 1941. Churchill talked a good game, and performed heroically in keeping the British people from just giving up, but the reality is that there was never any chance of Britain alone defeating Germany. The UK could do no more than hold what little it had left, the Home Islands and its distant Empire, which Germany never threatened. It had neither the industrial might nor the manpower to attempt an invasion and liberation of continental Europe.
However, you're 100% right in saying that Barbarossa ended forever a possibility of German victory in any form, by any definition. Even if that wasn't true, Hitler's second colossal blunder of declaring war on the United States would have sealed the deal. By the end of 1941, Nazi Germany was doomed.

The similiarity is not only in their speaking abilities.
Obama's thug tactics are much like those used in the beginning of Hitler's rise to power.
Hitler used the fear and hate for bankers, rich Jews, and the poor economy to fuel class warfare. He used the Brown Shirts to do his bidding much like Obama has used ACORN and SEIU members.
Is this to say Obama would evolve into the murderer Hitler became? No, but if given the power, members of his gang of thugs would not easily give it up if freedom loving Americans rebelled. Stopping the power grab being attempted by the health care take over will go a long way in preventing the possibility of finding out how ruthless they are.
Those who refuse to make the comparison are being naive or are afraid of being labeled racist or a right wing nut job. I am not afraid or ashamed to state this fact.

Oh, nonsense. It's absurd. Hitler was a deadly efficient and effective politician and was beloved by the people. He also aggressively promoted his own country and played to their sense of patriotism and superiority. They'll all be gone in a few years in any case.
Obama and Co is the most bumbling bunch of incompetents yet foisted upon the world. Obama can hardly say United States, it sticks in his craw, actively discourages patriotism (aside from lip service) and appears to be bent on making everyone in the country feel as inferior and ashamed to be American. And goes around apologizing for us to the rest of the world.
Their goals may be quite similar, but Hitler was *far* more effective a leader. So, no sale.
