A Small Example Of Kosmic Proportions

What the hell is in the water at the South Carolina State House?

South Carolina Lt. Governor Andrew Bauer, a Republican contender hoping to replace current Goofenor Mark Sanford, is being taken to task for remarks he made regarding those who receive long-term government assistance.

From Greenvilleonline.com:

Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer drew a comparison to "feeding stray animals" during a speech about people on government assistance, "babies having babies," and parents whose children are on free and reduced-price lunch.

"My grandmother was not a highly educated woman but she told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals. You know why? Because they breed. You're facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a person ample food supply. They will reproduce, especially ones that don't think too much further than that. And so what you've got to do is you've got to curtail that type of behavior. They don't know any better," Bauer said.

Bauer's remarks came during a speech in which he said government should take away assistance if those receiving help didn't pass drug tests or attend parent-teacher conferences or PTA meetings if their children were receiving free and reduced-price lunches.

Bauer later told The Greenville News on Friday that he wasn't saying people on government assistance "were animals or anything else."

In his speech to the group, Bauer said people have to become more engaged with government.

"You see, for the first time in the history of this country, we've got more people voting for a living than we do working for a living," he said.

Not a very tactful way to make his point. (Though that last quote is pretty clever.)

While his intention was to emphasize the importance of breaking the "cycle of dependency" on long-term governmental assistance, he is being hammered by both Republicans and Democrats within the political circle of South Carolina.

That said, it provides us with a glittering opportunity to witness the trademark manufactured outrage which permeates that bastion of intellectual integrity, "The Daily Kos."

While the purveyors of the cult-like pap which passes for opinion would provide enough psychological study to baffle the likes of Freud for a life time, the delusional genius of Kos resides with the loyal kooks in the komment sections, better known as Kosmonuts.

This situation provides a shining example of what constitutes the group mentality of the zoo that makes up Kos.

As is their wont on many an occasion, they have managed to boil this issue down to one over-riding motive: RACISM.

At the time of this posting, there were 249 komments regarding Mr. Bauer's remarks, the first of which comes from a being named "BlutoDog":

"Poor" = code for Black kids

That's it. That collectively sums up the basis of all 249 komments.

Mr. Bauer is now considered a racist for clumsily saying people can do better.

Had Obama been the one to have stated the same idea in a more eloquent manner, it would be regarded as insightfully compassionate.

Just out of curiosity, I searched Kos for Obama's "they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion" quote, describing all those white, redneck Pennsylvanian hicks during the Presidential campaign.

Surely, this too, must be regarded as a racist statement in the keen eyes of the kommenters of Kos. No?

Well, to my dismay, most all of the 999 komments regarding Obama's sincere observation were comprised of gleeful agreement, summed up succinctly by kommenter "Heart of the Rockies":

He brings up issues everyone else avoids or lies about. Utterly amazing. What a chance we have here for real change, profound change.

Krazy kids.

We're talking about South Carolina State career politicians here, I think. I really don't think it matters whether they have a D or an R after their names.

You mean like Bill Cosby getting told off by Black folks for "airing their dirty laundry in public"? As Cosby notes: YOUR DIRTY LAUNDRY IS OUT THERE AFTER 3PM EVERY WEEKDAY, FOR EVERYONE TO SEE.

When are we going to knock off THE BULLSHIT and start talking about the problems, instead of pushing them off 'for later'?

As I noted in an earlier thread, we've got people on the public teat since LBJ's "Great Society". If we'd GIVEN all those people (no matter what their fucking color) the money (TRILLIONS) that we've poured into 'social progams' - Obama would be taxing their asses into next Tuesday because of all the money they'd have. The government should provide EQUALITY of treatment. Screw that EQUALITY OF OUTCOME. That's Barry's socialist shtick. Some always strive to do better, others are happy to just get by. When the 'intellectual elites' finally realize that, we can get off the pity trip for "the poor people".

Ok, I haven't read the article yet but I would like to say that the water is fine here in Charleston, the problem is in Columbia. I don't know about the rest of the state, but us Charlestonians are doing our best to 'clean' up the mess in the midlands!

Clumsily put? Yes. True? Another yes.

I overheard a discussion a few days ago at work. A young man was talking about a single female friend of his who has been on state assistance for years. She hasn't worked a day in those years. She is also pregnant with her third child. She is angry that the sate assistance worker told her that this is the last child the state will pay for.

I don't care if she's angry. She's an idiot. I AM happily surprised that our state has decided to draw a line. Enough is enough. They should have told her this after the first child.

JLawson:

You get more of behavior you subsidize.

(Shrug.)

There's coming a time, and it's not long off, when it won't be possible to pay people to not work.

"Bauer's remarks came during a speech in which he said government should take away assistance if those receiving help didn't pass drug tests or attend parent-teacher conferences or PTA meetings if their children were receiving free and reduced-price lunches."

I actually see no problems with this. If you're on government assistance and doing drugs, you're not holding up your end of the bargain. You're supposed to be trying to BETTER yourself so you can get OFF the assistance, not get yourself hooked on something that'll ensure you're a friggin' wreck.

And if you're not concerned with your kid's education, why should the government be concerned with keeping you at the low level you're stuck at? You think the welfare offices WANT a continual supply of ignorant people with their hands out? If your kids get an education, they can get off the dole. If they don't, they won't - it's as simple as that.

We haven't done several generations of kids any favors by just giving social promotions to get them out of school, and by dumbing down both the curriculm and the expectations to a point where it's assumed that a public high school diploma's about as valuable as toilet paper.

But they graduate feeling good about themselves - guess that counts for something, doesn't it? Maybe it'll cushion their feelings a bit when they realize they didn't learn eough in high school to find a job that'll pay them enough to live on...

There's things to do to get out of poverty. Unfortunately, government doesn't subsidize those things - and does subsidize bad behavior. It's not surprising, then, that it continues...

Truth is no defense for Republicans. We can reinterpret your words faster than you can say them and our new meaning will always prove you filthy neocons are RACIST.

Here's a big wet kiss as a thank you to all those RINOs and "conservatives not Republicans" who are so ready to believe us and not you.

Peace.

Personally, I think he correct. Yeah, I know you have to be very, very selective of the words you use. Maybe that's why this country is in a mess that it is, we are too busy trying not to "hurt" anyone's feelings or be called names ourselves.

It's also worth noting that... (Below threshold)

It's also worth noting that Bauer's "racist" observation is one of the main reasons Margaret Sanger (one of the Left's most venerated patron saints) promoted abortion among the poor. Being an avowed proponent of eugenics, Sanger believed that the global stock of the human race could be improved if we prevented the lower classes from breeding.

Sanger is worshiped as a pioneer of reproductive rights, feminism, etc. But any conservative who points out the relationship between government welfare and out-of-wedlock child births is a racist? (Bill Bennett's controversial remarks a few years ago also come to mind.)

A whopping double standard indeed. Or more likely, incontrovertible evidence that the Kos Kiddies are both ignorant of, and incapable of defending, their own history. Instead, they just call people names.
