Dorgan faces almost certain defeat if Republican Governor John Hoeven runs against him. According to Rasmussen's latest poll on December 21, Hoeven would trounce Dorgan, 58% to 36%. Health care is a huge problem for the senator, as a whopping 64% of North Dakotans don't want what Dorgan is voting to give them.
What a schmuck Dorgan is. Rather than doing what his constituents want him to do and vote against the Democrats' health care catastrophe, he's going to vote for it anyway and then retire and enjoy the government's fat pension and high quality health care, all funded by the US taxpayer. What a freaking coward.
"Although I still have a passion for public service and enjoy my work in the Senate, I have other interests and I have other things I would like to pursue outside of public life. I have written two books and have an invitation from a publisher to write two more books. I would like to do some teaching and would also like to work on energy policy in the private sector."So, over this holiday season, I have come to the conclusion, with the support of my family, that I will not be seeking another term in the U.S. Senate in 2010. It is a hard decision to make after thirty years in the Congress, but I believe it is the right time for me to pursue these other interests.
"Let me be clear that this decision does not relate to any dissatisfaction that I have about serving in the Senate. Yes, I wish there was less rancor and more bipartisanship in the U.S. Senate these days. But still, it is a great privilege to serve and I have the utmost respect for all of the men and women with whom I serve.
So long and don't let the door hit you on the way out.

TRANSLATION: The people I represent are pissed off and I have a snow balls chance in hell of getting re-elected. So I'm gonna take my pension and health care and run. Suckers!

Some Democrats CAN read the writing on the wall, others will be dumbfounded that the voters despised them enough to elect someone else.

What I don't understand is why more pressue isn't placed on Evan Bayh of Indiana to vote against closure for ObamaCare. He's from a very red state and up for re-election this year. Is he considered that much of an electoral sure thing?

Soon that leak will become a flood and the rats will desert so fast that the Republicans will win most of the races by default. I guess that is what you get when you support a highly unpopular position as the ObamaCare boondoggle. Too bad Dingy Harry can't read the writing on the chalkboard and retire, but as first mate of the sinking ship, he will go down with the ship before he scurries for the hills of Nevada. Let the fun begin. All is needed now is a ton of popcorn to make things more enjoyable.

As a real life North Dakotan, I can tell you that we're not going to miss him. We've had The Three Stooges (Pomeroy, Countrywide Conrad, and Dorgan) in office way too long. They only reason they kept getting elected is because they had seniority which is they only way North Dakota can get anywhere, but it certainly came at a cost. I will look forward to having a new person represent us, and CAN NOT WAIT for Conrad to get out of office next!
It's a happy day, even though it's only 9 degrees out up here!

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is exactly why the democrats could care less about the 2010 election and why they are shoving this legislation down our throats; in close, contested races the incumbent, if they can, will retire and laugh all the way to the bank as they cash their hefty pension checks. Those who cannot retire will face the possibility of not being re-elected, then laugh all the way to their new job as a lobbyist for democrat causes. Either way, the people of this country are the real losers.

Spot on. The Democrats are thinking strategically while the Republicans are thinking tactically. IOW, the Democrats are thinking of 2010 as collateral damage. They know that once this healthcare abomination is signed into law, they will have succeeded in setting the wheels in motion to exponential growth in the federal government. They feel it's worth the price. They're also betting that the Republicans won't have the intestinal fortitude to reverse the damage. And on that bet I think the odds are leaning towards the Dems. The Republicans are just thinking about their wondrous return to power, and little beyond that.
Instead of threatening the Democrats with something they've already written off, all eyes should turn to the Republicans and pressure each and every one to make a commitment that they will annihilate every trace of the healthcare travesty. They should know that they will not keep their jobs if they don't.
And we should mean it this time.
