The day that I was waiting for has finally come. North Korea has finally designed the perfect set of jeans and is selling them-- unfortunately we can't get them in the United States. However, if you'd like, you can run over to Sweden and pick me up a pair.
Just look for the "Noko" label.
"There is a political gap, there is a mental gap, and there is an economic gap," said Jacob Astrom, one of three Swedish advertising executives behind the project. "All contacts with the country are difficult and remain so to this day."The idea for the project was born out of curiosity for North Korea, which has grown increasingly isolated in recent years under Western criticism of its human rights record and nuclear ambitions.
"The reason we did this was to come closer to a country that was very difficult to get into contact with," Astrom said.
North Korea, a country better known for its reclusive nature than fashionable clothes, rarely allows outsiders within its borders and has virtually no trade or diplomatic relations with most Western countries. Sweden, one of only seven countries to have an embassy in North Korea, is an exception.
But the process of agreeing a deal to produce just 1,100 pairs of jeans -- the first ever produced by the country, according to the founders -- often proved baffling. E-mails vanished into a void and communications were strained.
There's only 1,100! Man, we've got to buy them while they're out.
By the way, is it just me, or are the jeans likely made up of human/dog hair and the skin of political prisoners?
And check out their website!

NoKo doesn't grow any cotton. They can't make jeans out of tree bark - their people have had to eat most of it already, ditto grass.
It seems most likely they hijacked a container of knock-off Levi's from China and are sewing their own patches on.
If they really want peace, they should send a special pair of Mommy jeans to Obama.

I expect these jeans will be all the rage among the Hollywood elite as the austere nature of such jeans offsets an otherwise decadent lifestyle. It's like buying carbon offsets, but this penitence can be proudly displayed in public. I expect Noko jeans are worth their weight in gold. The Swedes are no fools.

I support this project. The enterpreneurs are right...any contact with such a closed country even just the manufacture and sale of jeans, is better than nothing and can possibly result in something good. Think of how Nixon opened up China. Yes they are still communist, but the standard of living has increased dramatically and people are more free socially even if they don't have as much political freedoms. Heck, thanks to Nixon, China is now America's banker. :)
I think any effort to open up NK is a good idea. This is the last place in the world where the IRON CURTAIN still exists. Any small opening in that curtain is welcome. As the entrepreneurs pointed out, there are normal ordinarly people living there, it's not just an entire nation of full of military men. They just want get to know and understand, and perhaps eventually help in some small way the ordinary folks of NK.
