Fred Thompson: Afghan war 'has been lost'
By Ben Smith
Politico.comFormer Senator Fred Thompson today intensified his party's criticism of President Obama's long deliberation over policy in Afghanistan, announcing that Obama's delay signals that "the war has been lost" and that nothing the president now does will "make any difference."
It really doesn't matter how President Obama divides the Afghan baby, how he splits the difference between McChrystal and Biden. Because the war has been lost. I say this because of one sad and simple fact. The president does not have the will and determination to do what's necessary to win it. His heart's not in it, and never has been. The Taliban knows it. Al Qaeda knows it. Our allies know it. And the American people know it
I wish I could argue against Thompson's logic, but I cannot.

Sigh.
Obama's leadership is darn near non-existant when it comes to military matters. Even a new 2nd Lieutenant or Ensign knows that when faced with a problem you have to decide how to tackle that problem - and you're not going to be able to wait until you know everything possible there is to know about the problem.
You're going to have to make decisions, and some of those decisions are going to be wrong. But you take what you learn and make a better decision the next time through.
Delaying making the decision doesn't make it easier, it doesn't make it safer, doesn't make it cost less, and it gives the enemy time to prepare for what you DO decide to do. Don't panic, but don't sit on your ass.
Obama's been sitting on his ass, refusing to commit, refusing to make a decision because it might reflect badly on his awesomeness if things don't go well.
Well, welcome to 1972, Obama. How's it feel to be playing the role of Nixon?

This pooch was screwed before Obama took office. Bush ignored Afghanistan beginning 6 months after we went in.

That is it exactly. We've seen how, contrary to reality, he'll claim his administration has saved the economy. He has the nerve to talk about accelerating job growth. He spends us into oblivion and yet talks about controlling the deficit. And with the MSM providing cover, he can get away with lying through his teeth.
But with Afghanistan, he won't be able to bullshit the american public, nor anyone else. All during the campaign he'd tell us that Afghanistan was the real war. That was the war the Bush administration was ignoring.
Quotes from 2008: "The Afghan government needs to do more. But we have to understand that the situation is precarious and urgent here in Afghanistan. And I believe this has to be our central focus, the central front, on our battle against terrorism," "I think one of the biggest mistakes we've made strategically after 9/11 was to fail to finish the job here, focus our attention here. We got distracted by Iraq," "For at least a year now, I have called for two additional brigades, perhaps three," he told CBS.
And now that he can actually do something about this "urgent" war, he refuses.
Contrary to the advice I suspect he's getting, he's not going to be able to blame anyone else for this incredible failure.
