Over the weekend, there was a rather large gay rights rally in DC. At it, speaker after speaker after speaker loudly demanded (with a minimum of lisping) that President Obama keep his promise and repeal the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy about gays serving openly.
Oh, silly, silly poofters. How little you know about our Commander In Chief.
Obama's stock in trade is in making promises. Not in keeping them.
Obama's whole career has been built on making promises that he's never held to. He was elected to the Senate in 2004 with a pledge to serve his full term. Had he kept that one, there's a good chance Rod Blagojevich would still be Illinois' governor and most of the country would have no idea who Roland Burris was.
Saturday Night Live recently had a skit about how few of Obama's promises he's kept. Making Afghanistan our top priority. Listening to his generals. Closing the prison at Guantanamo Bay. Fixing the economy.
When he argued for the stimulus package, he said that it was necessary -- without it, unemployment would rise. We passed it, now unemployment's well past what he said it would be without the stimulus package.
He promised to usher in a new era of bipartisanship, of openness, of integrity, of post-race politics. He said he'd forbid lobbyists from serving in his administration.
I still recall that at one point during the health care mess, the administration announced that it was so fed up with the Congressional bickering, that it was going to put together its own proposal for health care reform over the weekend.
Think about that for a moment. Health care reform was Obama's signature issue, but he didn't bother to even put together his own program until this summer -- and only then because Congress wasn't doing it.
Hell, read the citation for his Nobel Peace Prize. It wasn't for anything he has done, but what he has promised to do.
That is a good chunk of the reason I didn't get too upset when he won the presidency. I was counting on a healthy portion of his promises to be proven empty. And so far, he's tremendously exceeded my expectations.
For a while, there was a meme that all of Obama's promises come with expiration dates -- usually hidden ones. Now, though, it appears that Obama's beliefs are inspired by Lewis Carroll:
"'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, 'it means just what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less.'"
Gosh, I hope this doesn't mean I'm a raaaaacist or something...

Obama promised that pro-gun people had noting to fear from him, yet there's hardly a box of pistol ammo to be had from either sporting goods stores or even Wal-Mart. As we are starting to see, that level of public distrust is spreading rapidly to many other sectors.
When you hear Obama go down his list of what healthcare reform will do and won't do, people need to realize they are hollow promises. The only thing healthcare reform will do is put government in charge of healthcare, increase taxes, and even with that, increase the deficit. Hollow promises are Obama's stock-in-trade, and a promise never intended to be kept is a lie.

-"I can unequivocally say I will not be running for national office in four years...I am a believer in knowing what you're doing when you apply for a job, and I think that if I were to seriously consider running on a national ticket, I would essentially have to start now, before having served a day in the Senate. He really is an "empty suit". Just like his "empty promises". He lies, he promises, he lies some more, then promises some more. Is that the reason a lot of people who voted for him are now crying the blues about how unfair he is to Americans. He is the only president in history that I know of who has never put their hand over their heart and pledged to support America. He is unAmerican, and it is a disgrace to call him Commander-in-Chief. He has no idea what courage and fortitude it takes to be a part of the American military. He is a coward of the worst sort, and I will be so happy when he is impeached for treason. I love my country and I support our troops and our military, unlike this BOZO.

Ah, Saud. That was weaker than usual. Much, much weaker...
So carefully you avoid the actual substance, instead focusing on the irrelevant... what is it - are you coming to realize that the actual intent backing Obama's promises is about as substantial as a projection on fog?
That he DOESN'T have anything other than charisma cranked to 11?
I'm sure Obama believes everything he says - when he says it. Five minutes later? "Oh look! Something shiny!" The thing is - he keeps making promises and sooner or later he's got to back them up with action, and looking over his past history his habit of doing that is notably missing...
So you have to ask yourself - are you happy with a President who's constantly promising all sorts of amazing things, who has no intention of ever making an effort to keep those promises? Who believes that the government should run a sixth of the national economy, yet screwed up something as relatively simple as Cash4Clunkers?
Or are you starting to 'repent', but dare not say the word?
