Two years ago the left was criticizing George Bush for ignoring the advice of his commanders. Also they were repeatedly telling anyone who would listen the war in Afghanistan was the righteous war - the one we really should be concentrating on, not Iraq.
Now that they're in a position to listen to their military advisors and concentrate on Afghanistan, everything should be hunky dory, right?

He will send more troops, he doesn't really have a choice politically and politics is all he knows. First though, as always, Obama has to arrange for cover for himself. He must get those running him to buy in - at least for awhile, and then (already in progress) setup someone other then himself to take the fall should things not work out, or not work out "fast enough" according to his political needs, then the easy part of getting the media to push the story. I don't know if McCrystal will get everything he wants but hopefully for all involved he does, as we're beyond half measures.

SillyPuddy, the only thing Obama knows is campaigning. If he were a real politician, he would recognized the unpopularity of his policies and modify them to meet what the citizens want. Not his guy. He is from the left and he will be left with nothing after the next election.

This isn't surprising. No sense having "goal posts" when you're on every side of an issue while at the same time, you're not taking sides.
Remember, according to news report from late July,
"President Obama has put securing Afghanistan near the top of his foreign policy agenda, but "victory" in the war-torn country isn't necessarily the United States' goal, he said Thursday in a TV interview.
"I'm always worried about using the word 'victory,' because, you know, it invokes this notion of Emperor Hirohito coming down and signing a surrender to MacArthur," Obama told ABC News."
With such a keen grasp of history, I suspect he's still staring at maps trying to find the place.

... it's a word used by the right. And we all know that whenever the right uses a word to describe something, we must find a kinder gentler word (or words) to describe it to differentiate ourselves. You know, like "overseas contingency operation" or "man-made disaster". In this case I think we should call it an "effectuated goal". Kinda takes the sting out of the loss for the Taliban. We don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. And besides, if we just leave we can still call it the same thing!

GarandFan,
That could be construed as a racist comment by the Ocrummy camp.
