Emilly Miller from Politics Daily caught up with former House Majority Leader (and current Dancing With The Stars) Tom DeLay on the way to a dance rehearsal and asked him about the health care debate (he predicts passage along party lines), and the state of the Republican party.
I asked his predictions for House seats in 2010. "Republicans will pick up some seats in the House, maybe 20, but not enough to take back control."Shaking his head with frustration, he added, "The Republican Party doesn't have the organization or leadership to take advantage of this dire political situation that Obama is in now. We have these grassroots sprouting up, but not the party organization to use them."
"Republicans are leaderless,'' he went on, "so we're just fighting each other instead of Obama's radical policies. There's no political leader of the party taking control. So, Republicans are just attacking each other for being too far right or too far left. Even Rush and Hannity are doing it."
So who does DeLay see as the GOP's up-and-comers? "No one," he replied in exasperation. "It's all the same old guys who were in leadership with me, and those old guys aren't the leaders the party needs."
He couldn't name one viable leader for the Republicans, saying that the party has no chance, "barring a miracle," of regaining the House or Senate next year.
I don't think it's unrealistic that there appear to no new leaders right now, but DeLay does have it right about the future. It's time for some new blood, pronto.

On the 'up side', you can't "Alinsky" a leader that isn't there.
Look at the damage being done right now, without a "leader".

Michael - "Why would anyone listen to a man who wore tights on national TV? Also Delay cut and ran from the house...so who cares what he thinks."
Question: Is that statement based on willful ignorance or a legitimate lack of knowledge?
"Cut and run," Indeed, the reality which you overlook is he was forced out because Republican Conference rules forced him to resign from his position as Majority Leader.
Then when running for a return to Congress thought the better of it due to polling numbers as a result of a sham court case brought by a sham prosecutor based on a law that didn't exist at the time of the alleged infraction.
In fact he took "one for the team" hoping to keep the seat if repub hands.

Notwithstanding DeLay's shortcomings - and he had many, many, many - he is right that the GOP has no real leadership, at least not that I want to hang my hat on.
But he is wrong that the GOP is spending its efforts fighting among itself. There are some, but most of the effort is going to fight Obama. And he is wrong that the GOP needs a leader if it is going to regain the House; House seats are going to be won on the basis of Obama's popularity and that of the particular candidates although to be fair, the last line in the excerpt leaves open the possibility that DeLay wasn't linking recapturing control with a lack of leadership, I just can't tell from the way it was written).

The "leader" they speak of probably doesn't belong to the Republican party, at least not any more. Sarah Palin appears to be positioning herself as a Libertarian. Is this the first glimpse of a possible third party candidate that is viable? I would vote for her if she ran as a Conservative Democrat!

I'm thinking a 'lack of leadership' for the Republican Party's not a bug - it's more of a feature.
I'm not worrying about it - when the time comes and it's needed, a leader will be apparent. But for now? There's no need for it - Obama's doing a fine job of setting up a Republican House and Senate in 2010...
