Maybe color matters after all.
When Joe Wilson called Obama a liar for asserting in his big speech that no illegal aliens would be covered under the Democrats' proposed health care plan, liberals were undeterred by the fact that Obama had just gotten through calling all of his opponents liars; by the fact that Obama was, to put it politely, misstating things when he made his claim about coverage for illegal aliens; and that Democrats had treated Bush just as rudely. Nope, what mattered to liberals was the (to them) obvious fact that, because he is a Southerner, Joe Wilson's sole reason for shouting out was Obama's skin color....Read it all at Bookworm RoomWell, I have a confession to make. Here it is. All of the liberal pundits are correct. I do have a big problem, a really big problem, with Obama's color. But my problem isn't the color of Obama's skin, which is completely irrelevant to me. Instead, it's with the color of his politics. With every passing day, Obama is proving to be an old-fashioned Red - a true, bone-deep socialist.

Not surprising, seeing as who his parents and grandparents were. He was raised as a socialist, trained as a socialist. All he's had going for him is a glib style and a flashy smile. Just try to dig up any past records on him. You won't find any. "Privacy concerns", you know.

True that, except "red" is no longer the proper term for hard core leftists/socialists/communists. Now the proper term is "green".

His father was a communist. His friends are not socialists they are communists and admit so publicly.
Socialist is merely the polite way of saying that the person is a communist, but realizes they cannot establish their Utopia today, or is simply not willing to kill that many people to accomplish it. Some of Obama's friends have already tried to kill people to get their way. He hasn't gone that far. Not yet.

Green is the right color for Obama. Stock market hit 2009 highs today. Remember when you guys were saying Obama was bad for the economy. That turned out to be false.
But it's understandable, given Obama's skin color, why some folks would be afraid of him and would just keep throwing names out at him.

Obama was (and probably is still) a socialist.
In 1995 he was a member of the New Party, receiving their endorsement.
He was also endorsed by the DSA, Democratic Socialists of America.
If this had been reported when he ran for President, I doubt he would have won.

Steve,
The Stock market is up partly due to the fact that Obama has expanded money supply and the money has to go somewhere.
Economists have also said in the past week looking at the anniversary of the Lehman Bros failure that the biggest banks are not healthier, but they are actually in worse shape and the dollar total is massively larger due to government intervention.
We have unemployment up at 9.7% and if you are a man it's well into the teens. Lawrence Summer, Obama's chief economic advisor stated that this will continue for a long time.
Obama is planning for skyrocketing deficits that will make Bush's deficits look like pocket change. China is already balking at buying more of our debt. When they finally stop Obama will be forced to print the money and to monetize our debt. That will result in double digit (if not triple digit) inflation.
Of course he could stop it all by stopping the spending, letting the markets sort out the banks like they should have done int the first place and cutting taxes so that small business owners can hire people again. You may not like the idea of cutting taxes, but it worked for JFK so shut it.

Steve, along with other pundits and apologists on either side of the aisle, presents the demonstrably false argument of "Hey, the market hit an all time/monthly/weekly/whatever's conveniently positive and supports my guy's policy high today." Bunk. The market reacts to the market, its conditions, etc., and has very little do with gov't policies. (Yes, it has some, but not to the extent Steve thinks.)
Steve, furthermore, you're a idiot if you honestly believe that opposition to Obama has--pardon my French here, Maggie--one fucking thing to do with his skin color, you racebaiting cretin.

Let's see, during the Bush years, with a robust stock market and unemployment around 5 - 6%, dems called it a jobless recovery.
What shall we call this then?
The lose-your-jobs-anyhow recovery?

Peter F is right. Government policy does not have a big direct effect on the economy. Spending has very little effect. Taxation has an indirect effect in so far as it effects rates of employment. Money supply has both direct and indirect effects in that money needs to go somewhere and it money supply can effect inflation rates.
Interest rates influence the market and they are controlled by the Federal Reserve which the government can try to influence, but does not completely control.

The President doesn't influence the stock market, but the President-elect does?
And you're right - President Obama has presided over the rebuilding of the economy, and that in turn is what boosted the stock market, not Obama's policies directly.

The scare late last year was due to exactly why we are still scared now. The market has to know what to expect in the future in order to plan ahead. Investors who are afraid of huge taxes and cap/trade legislation are not going to invest like they would if they knew that the market would be allowed to work itself out.
Those threats are what set off the decline last year, and have kept it low and lower since then. The increases you see now are more due to inflation and available money than to any confidence in the market itself.

We were railing against the bailouts, dimwit! We were pointing out that the Fannie Mae/Freddy Mac disaster was brought about not be greed, but by stupid federal laws forcing institutions to make stupid loans.
Most conservatives thought McCain was an ASS for pushing the TARP plan and auto bailouts and Bush subsequently said he erred by not letting the markets take care of the situation.
BTW, the market did start trending down when he clinched the nomination. Since markets are psychological in their behavior some have attributed it to people planning for the assumption that Obama's policies would be bad for the economy in the long run.

Locally, the post office is giving notice to workers. Local officials have told 57 city workers that they'll be "leaving" by the end of the month. But hey, housing prices are UP. Unfortunately, sales are DOWN.

Clearly I acknowledge that anyone who uses that argument does so falsely.
President Obama has presided over the rebuilding of the economy, and that in turn is what boosted the stock market, not Obama's policies directly.
Hmmm, Obama "presided" over the rebuilding of the economy. Interesting. So basically what you're saying is that by simply occupying (aka: presiding) his seat in the Oval Office--and through no specific act or policy--Obama magically made the economy better. Holy Chirst, this man is powerful!
I think you need to figure out your position there, Steve. Either he did or didn't do something to influence the economy. If you think he did, then present some evidence that supports that premise.
Better still, go back and read jim m.'s post at #10 to figure out what very little influence the president actually has over the market.

A person of color, whether red, white, blue, black, brown, green, purple, you name it, what is important is the color (integrity) within. Obama has none. That is the color I judge him by. No other.
