In what should come a shock to no one (except perhaps the main stream media that bungled the story initially), the identity of the alleged gunman who killed Neda Agha-Soltan has been revealed. The Times Online reports:
The man accused of killing Neda Soltan has been identified as Abbas Kargar Javid, a pro-government militiaman, after photographs of the Basiji's ID cards appeared on the internet.The identification challenges the Iranian regime's claim that foreign agents shot the young woman, who became a global symbol of resistance to the Government of President Ahmadinejad.
Perhaps in a few weeks The White House can issue a tepid denounciation of violence and renew their call to meet face to face with Ahmadinejad...

Technically it should read "the identity of the gunman who allegedly killed..."
The issue is whether he killed her or not. That he is a man (or a 'gunman') isn't really in dispute.

the question is whether he is the one who killed her. If he is, then he is necessarily a gunman.
For instance: The man who screwed up my wiring may or may not be an electrician, but he was acting as one when he screwed up the wiring. The question is not whether he is an electrician but whether he committed the act.
In the same way being a gunman is not necessarily a crime, but murder is. The concern is not that someone is alleging that he carried a gun, but rather that he committed murder.
Conversely, if I complained about the alleged electrician who screwed up my wiring I would not be casting doubt on whether he screwed it up, but whether he was a qualified electrician.
In this case no doubts are being raised as to this individuals qualifications as a gunman.
