It won't apply to unions. Interesting how the collectivists stick together and watch each others' backs. Link via Ace.
The U.S. Senate proposal to impose taxes for the first time on "gold-plated" health plans may bypass generous employee benefits negotiated by unions.Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, the chief congressional advocate of taxing some employer-provided benefits to help pay for an overhaul of the U.S. health system, says any change should exempt perks secured in existing collective- bargaining agreements, which can be in place for as long as five years.
The exception, which could make the proposal more politically palatable to Democrats from heavily unionized states such as Michigan, is adding controversy to an already contentious debate. It would shield the 12.4 percent of American workers who belong to unions from being taxed while exposing some other middle-income workers to the levy.
I'm no constitutional lawyer like our dear President Obama, but I see "violation of the equal protection clause" written all over this.

So here in this one article we have the abondonment of not one, but two campaign promises;
1: 95% of the American people will not be taxed.
2: I will not tax healthcare benefits like that nasty John Mcain
and a ploy to protect a constitunecy from said broken promises.
How can anyone defend this guy? I mean seriosly, forget the bull in the china shop this guy is a friggin MOAB in a Stueben Crystal warhouse. Can we at least forget the pretence that he is somehow a different more ethical politician and call him out for the lying sack that he is?

So what? The Chrysler and GM bankruptcies violated the contracts clause of the Constitution. Didn't stop the socialist swine then, did it? Won't stop them now, either.
Wake up, Kim. The Constitution means nothing anymore. The conservative cry of "That's unconstitutional!" has become a version of the six-year-old's perennial complaint "That's not faiiiiir!" It may be true, or it may not, but either way, it doesn't matter because the ones making the decisions don't care.

So let me get this right. It's not enough that one would voluntarily enter into a private insurance system where some benefit more than others. As a result of being part of that system they must pay more to benefit another system they are not even part of.
Is that about right?

the pace of "Change" in Washington is being intentionally accelerated. the clever pols on the Left know for a fact that the American public barely keeps up with events that move at a slower pace...and not at all when the pace accelerates.
Further, so much of the legislation spewing forth has a "Nah...no WAY they did THAT!" quality to it, that even if it hits their radar screen the average American thinks they misread it!

So if I took a non-union job my healthcare benefits can be taxed, but if I took a union one they aren't? Please, Paul, jp2, hyper and Lee, explain this to me. After you're done reading and providing the explanation of support to the last 300 page amendment to the Cap and Trade bill. That might take you a while. I'll wait.

MJ had a castle and all the kiddies (and grown up) boy toys he wanted, Sanford had a Latin Lover, for God's sake, and look what the Dem bad boys got!

Well, you've got to pay for health care somehow...
Yeah, it may LOOK like jumping off the cliff is a viable alternative to taking the road the rest of the way, and it certainly gets you to your destination faster... if your destination's a pile of steaming economic wreckage... but there's usually a reason why the road goes in a different direction when it gets close to the cliff edge.H/T Instapundit
By the way, you notice how - even when faced with breaking one of the most fundamental promises of his campaign - Obama WILL NOT SCALE BACK the spending? Grab everything you can with Waxman's cap and tax? Grab everything you can regarding health care? Grab control of the banks? Grab control of industry?
Grabby little bastards, aren't they?
The Democrats are grabbing everything they can for the government. The question is - will there be anything left for US?
