Nothing says freedom like a wiener:
From AFP:
The United States said Monday its invitations were still standing for Iranian diplomats to attend July 4 celebrations at US embassies despite the crackdown on opposition supporters.President Barack Obama's administration said earlier this month it would invite Iran to US embassy barbecues for the national holiday for the first time since the two nations severed relations following the 1979 Islamic revolution.
"There's no thought to rescinding the invitations to Iranian diplomats," State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters.
"We have made a strategic decision to engage on a number of fronts with Iran," Kelly said. "We tried many years of isolation, and we're pursuing a different path now."
But he said it was not clear if Iranian diplomats had accepted the invitations. The State Department has said that the invitations are largely a symbolic gesture of goodwill and that the July 4 barbecues were not intended to take up substantive policy matters.
Obama has walked a tightrope since the violence broke out in Iran, urging the Islamic regime to end its repression of protests but insisting he will not let Tehran's leaders cast the United States as a bogeyman.
People are dying in the streets of Iran protesting rigged elections and brutal treatment by the heavy-handed regime.
It's bad enough President Obama has not responded with a more stern tone toward this reality. He has chosen to take a path of least resistance, despite the fact the United States is already being blamed for fomenting dissent among the revolutionaries of Iran.
Rational thought would dictate a proper and just response. At the very least, Obama should call off his invitation to allow American personnel to dine with representatives of the Iranian regime.
This one most celebrated day of freedom our country has to offer, will be besmirched by purposefully ignoring the outright brutality that we, as Americans, deem inhumane and barbaric.
Think about this: We will invite representatives of the Iranian regime, whose goal is to repress the freedom of its own citizenry, to join and sully the celebration of our own hard fought freedom.
There are no words to describe the full measure of hypocrisy regarding this gesture.
Hot dog diplomacy.
Better not serve pork.

If he had any cajones and any will and any courage, he would stand up for these oppressed people and remind Iran about what makes the USA the greatest nation in the world -- our freedoms, our strength and our fire power, which we're not afraid to use if pushed far enough. Unfortunately that'll never happen with this wishy-washy apologist.

George W. Bush fought the Axis of Evil for seven years. The year he left office one of the remaining two members of that Axis stood on the brink -- will Obama stubbornly cling to his, "one world of rainbows and lollipops as long as we extend an open hand," philosophy or will he grab the hard fought victory that has been presented to him?

I would keep the invitations in place if only to cultivate relationships between people on the ground, as it were, in the American foreign service and its Iranian equivalent. In the context of the current events in Iran, it's important to remember that the opposition is primarily calling not for full-scale revolution, but rather for reform within the current Islamic Republic system. Ergo, the same diplomats would likely staff Iranian embassies regardless of the outcome of the election.
Still, it doesn't really look that good to be doing this ...

Comedic potential is exponentionally greater on Fox News Channel in the wake of an effective Obama press conference. For example, Krauthammer looked as if he swallowed a fly as the "all-star panel" returned post-presser.
To be fair, Fox's competition, MSNBC, is unwatchable from noon til 4pm due the anchorship of that yenta now married to the ex-Fed chairman (Mr. Bubble?).
As for FNC being "real news", Fox has resorted to inserting Suzanne Somers and Charlie Daniels as political commentaters. At least I've not heard Hannity dub them "legends" as Huckabee is always doing (though he does call them "all-stars"), but RedEye seepage and pop synergy marches apace. Also, the busy, goofy Fox picture-in-picture viewing format (with two (2) "news" scrolls and four (4) "news" screens is NOT serious or real, like O'Reilly's spring break segmaents.
