I just watched the news conference held by Donald Trump and Carrie Prejean regarding the decision that she will keep her Miss California crown. She was incredibly eloquent. I can't imagine the pressure she was under. She addressed the photos that have been released. She said some were photoshopped and others were taken between posing on a windy day. The ones taken when she was 17 were not nude and were taken for her modeling book.
I saw some really nasty comments coming from a David Shuster Twitter account. After Shuster's disgusting "tea bagging" segment nothing should surprise me, but I still had to go to the MSNBC website to make sure it was his real Twitter account. Here is a sampling:
# Prejean, who got cosmetic surgery before the pageant, just spoke of "how women can make a difference in the world." Absolutely revolting.
# Everybody involved in this story - from Prejean to Terrell to pageant officials to Trump, - everybody involved makes me want to vomit.
# Donald Trump: Lying is fine by me.
# Can't we just do away with these stupid beauty pageants? I'm anchoring 11am - 1pm today and sitting in for CM on Hardball tonight at 5p/7p.
# Tami Farrell, Miss CA runner up to Prejean: "She was binded by contractural obligations..." Umm, it's BOUND BY...BOUND BY. Good grief.
Update: The Politico story focuses on Trump's statement that Prejean's position is the same as Obama's.
The thing I liked most about Prejean's statement was her focus on tolerance for those of differing views. Far too often it is considered ok, even admirable, to show intolerance of conservative viewpoints.
Update II: A commenter posted a link to the pictures of Prejean that TMZ ran and described them as "totally topless" and "full unobstructed frontal nudity." That is a serious exaggeration. These are the same pics I referred to in the post ("taken between posing on a windy day").
From what I can see, the pictures were not intended to be nude. She was working as a model in a photo shoot and was wearing a vest that was obviously supposed to be covering her breasts (at least partially). You can see that it was windy, her hair was blowing in her face, and she was trying to brush the hair out of her face. It is unbelievable that a supposedly professional photographer would release those two frames from her photo session to the public. (What a slimeball.)
Imagine a photo shoot with 50 or 100 or however many frames. I don't know how many they shoot, but I know they take many, many shots to get the one they want. Since these were the only 2 released I assume her breasts were covered in the other 48 or 98 or however many frames. She might not have even realized how exposed she was in the shots. The photographer would have been shooting as she was moving and until she saw the finished product she probably didn't know what he caught on film. Even if she did realize the vest slipped in 2 shots I doubt it is something she would have thought of when answering the question two years later.
You would think those on the Left might be a little more concerned about a President in the White House opposing gay marriage than a Contestant in a Beauty Pageant, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Update III: Wow. I don't know that I have ever agreed with anything Jon Stewart has said as much as I do this hilarious take on the Prejean controversy. The funniest part is when he compares the "sexy picture slut" Prejean in the photo shoot to the "swimsuit role model" footage of her parading across the stage in her swimsuit.

Is that what Miss America ratings illustrate or is it something larger? For the sake of argument I think it's safe to say the pageants could loosely classified as "awards shows."
The Grammy Awards and the Academy Awards, have been in a ratings tailspin also, last year's Academy Awards were reportedly the lowest-rated in 39 years, attracting only 32 million viewers (live plus same day), and marking a decline in viewing for the fifth straight year.
The 2008 Primetime Emmy Awards drew only 12.3 million viewers, a drop of 33%.
And BTW your Miss America example isn't a fair example, Miss America pageant even moved to cable and isn't available to as many homes as it once was.
On the other hand most it not all the pageants have declined in popularity.

"If it's her heart and her beliefs and her God -- what business does she have dictating her beliefs on others?...It's her bible [sic] - why should her bible[sic] dictate the rights of gay Americans? It shouldn't."
I wonder what to make of this then.
"In a 2007 Chicago Tribune interview, Obama said, 'I'm a Christian. And so, although I try not to have my religious beliefs dominate or determine my political views on this issue ... my religious beliefs say that marriage is something sanctified between a man and a woman.'"
Funniest to me is the big problem with Prejean's Bible dictating the rights of gay Americans -- as a CONTESTANT in a BEAUTY PAGEANT. But no problem with Obama's Bible dictating the rights of gay Americans as PRESIDENT from the WHITE HOUSE.
Unless those criticizing Prejean now have been criticizing Obama in the same way all along for his position, they have zero credibility (and they look pretty stupid too, but that goes without saying).

Regarding update 2 and comment 22:
Looking at the entire set of pictures it is clear they were meant to be titillating and revealing but probably not nude. The gray vest she wore would never have sufficiently covered her bosom. In trying it on she had to know it would reveal a significant portion of her breasts. Much more that you will normally see at the beach. You make it sound like the photographer snuck up on her in the changing tent but in several of the pictures she is clearly posing and not between poses. The photographer was probably just snapping away and figured he would sort it out later.
She is a young woman and may have been manipulated by a sleazy photographer. I am sure she did not intend to do nude shots or shots that revealed her areolae. But if you put on a vest that is far too small to cover your tits in the best of conditions then it will never cover them. With digital photography you can take hundreds of shots and look through them later for the gems. In this case someone found all the best nip slips.
I am not arguing about Ms. Prejean or her beliefs. Only about the interpretation of her topless photos.

Look at the few other pictures that were released as part of the same series. Were they revealing? Sure. Were they "totally topless" and "full unobstructed frontal nudity" as you claimed? No way. Not even close. Even the couple pics that revealed a breast did not fit that description.
If they released all the other 50 or however many frames they shot, and all (or even most) showed her topless, or even revealing her breast as the two TMZ ran did, then I would say she was posing for a partially nude photo shoot. But from what I have seen so far, that is just not the case.
And yes, I do believe the vest could have slipped out of place when she was repositioning for the next pose or when trying to brush hair from her face. Anyone who has ever watched even one episode of America's Next Top Model would too. (Unless they were blinded by their hatred for a conservative Christian who dared to speak her mind and saw topless unobstructed full frontal nudity when they looked at them.) There are times on that program (ANTM) they have to blur or pixel out parts of the pictures they take as the girls are doing the photo shoots because a breast, or other body part, is exposed. The final pictures are shown on television, but sometimes what they get in the process of shooting is not. Is that really that complicated to understand?

On the other, since Western civilization is uniquely evil in how it treats women, ANYTHING elsewhere is automatically better.
