Today David Brooks just now realized that Barack Obama is a leftist. Many of us conservatives figured this fact out a long time ago because we paid attention to Obama's actions while he was a US senator, an Illinois state senator, and board director, and his actions told us he was a leftist.
Hell, Joe the Plumber understood what Barack Obama was all about.
David Brooks, though, not so much:
The U.S. has never been a society riven by class resentment. Yet the Obama budget is predicated on a class divide. The president issued a read-my-lips pledge that no new burdens will fall on 95 percent of the American people. All the costs will be borne by the rich and all benefits redistributed downward. The U.S. has always been a decentralized nation, skeptical of top-down planning. Yet, the current administration concentrates enormous power in Washington, while plan after plan emanates from a small group of understaffed experts.
The U.S. has always had vibrant neighborhood associations. But in its very first budget, the Obama administration raises the cost of charitable giving. It punishes civic activism and expands state intervention.
The U.S. has traditionally had a relatively limited central government. But federal spending as a share of G.D.P. is zooming from its modern norm of 20 percent to an unacknowledged level somewhere far beyond.
Those of us who consider ourselves moderates -- moderate-conservative, in my case -- are forced to confront the reality that Barack Obama is not who we thought he was.
Those of us who consider ourselves conservatives knew who he was. Why is it we could see Barack Obama was a leftist, yet people like David Brooks, Clive Crook, Christopher Buckley, and David Broder had no clue?
Perhaps they, like Chris Matthews, were too busy thinking with their tingling legs.
Update: Tony Blankley has Barack Obama pegged:
He doesn't like America the way it has been since its founding - and it will take an abusively big government to realize his dreams of converting America into something quite different. If you don't know that, you don't yet know Barack Obama.

He just noticed! He could not tell he was lying to everyone! He cannot be this dumb can he?
BTW...thanks to moderates like him we got McCain and not a conservative to run against Obama. So, this guy makes me mad twice as much. People like Brooks are the reason we have Obama as President. Thank a whole a lot!

Many of the people who voted for him did indeed want a big government....less for them to do and worry about...and screwing the rich for..well for being rich. Envy, no wonder it is a sin...look at the damage it can cause.
But how in hell could any one who was not for big government (socialism) be charmed by Obama. They wanted "change", did not care what the change was, but it was a good chant to yell out.
Many, many of us knew the disaster Obama would be. I was willing to get him a chance, but in my heart I knew he would be the worst thing for this country. I do dislike him intensely, but I have more contempt for the people who voted him in.

Well Gee Obama is EXACTLY who I thought he was. A naive tax and spend Liberal Socialist who is going to put the country through the wringer. All I had to do to come to this conclusion before Obama proves it was open my eyes.

You know, David Brooks has always been a moderate and in my opinion a RINO. The fact that even he is waking up now is a good sign for what is going on in people's minds in America.
I agree with you, though, that people like him should have wakened up BEFORE Obama was elected instead of AFTER.
Maybe people like Brooks will now listen to us who are trying to warn people that Obama's plans are going to destroy the country unless we all band together to stop him and all of his Democrat Party flunkies in Washington.
