An Israeli girl has become a divorcee at the age of 14.Funny I thought a marriage was consummated when the bride and groom....Never mind I'm Catholic but I've been in attendance at one jewish wedding in my life.It all began as a lark, in a schoolyard where a 17-year-old boy recently declared the girl his wife, reciting a Jewish ritual vow in front of witnesses, and she accepted his ring.
That, and what a spokeswoman for Israel's Rabbinical Courts said was the consummation of their marriage, was enough to make them man and wife in the Jewish state.

They are probably referring to yichud, when the couple retreats to privacy immediately after the ceremony. Traditionally this would mark the first time the couple has ever been together in seclusion (yichud rules are still followed in orthodox communities). It's not so much that they consummate the marriage, but that they have the (mostly symbolic) opportunity to do so.

No, I think they consummate marriage the same way Catholics do, Bill. While vague, the text leads me to believe that the girl would have been inspected by a rabbi or perhaps a nurse; been discovered not to be a virgin; and thus would the marriage be valid.
14 years of age. Yuck city.

Nope, I never had sex with a 14 year old (after I was 14, at least). Must have been a pretty desperate 17 year old (then again most of them are).

Falze, is it racist to muse about harmless religious superstitions that other people have? And they do rock super-cool wigs. If you have ever spent any time in an Orthodox Jewish neighbourhood--and I will assume that you haven't--you would notice that there are a wildly disproportionate number of wig shops.
But I guess that would be racist, just like it's racist to say that Bobby Jindal sucks at delivering televised speeches.
