Readers may recall that every so often I like to get a sense of how they rate the Presidents of the United States. This go-round, I am doing something a little different; I randomized the list and then cut them into sets of three. Each day I will ask you about two sets, in each set rank the presidents 1-2-3 within that set. Here are today's sets:
Set Five
Abraham Lincoln
Herbert Hoover
William Harrison
Set Six
Benjamin Harrison
Gerald Ford
John Adams

Set Five
Abraham Lincoln (just for the Civil War alone)
Herbert Hoover (The Roaring '20's Fall Guy)
William Harrison (died in office a mere month after his inauguration [he caught a cold during his long-winded inauguration speech on a wet and raw day], so he really can't be compared to anybody)
Set Six
Gerald Ford (for his response to the Mayaguez incident)
John Adams (no particular reason)
Benjamin Harrison (no particular reason)

Set Two also easy:
JA
BH
JF
Ford was a good guy, but he pardoned Nixon.

I'm ambivalent about Lincoln. The Civil War is a positive? Lincoln's legacy is the iron-fisted centralized government that we see today. I am not saying he was an evil man, but people should be more skeptical of the idolatrous mythos surrounding him. Slavery in the states could and would have been eliminated without the bloody Civil War.

Hoover (though Harrison had only 30 days in office, at least he did not do active harm: Smoot-Hawley kills Hoover's reputation)
Set 6

1. Lincoln
2. Hoover (had bad timing, economic knowledge was limited in those days)
3. W. Harrison (really can't be rated because of 30 day term)
1. Adams (great in many ways, but Alien and Sedition almost brought him down on my list)
2. Ford (last of the Republican moderates, should have been relected)
3. B. Harrison (feh)

Set 1:
Lincoln - Trying to keep both the Union together and keep his cabinet from each others' throats.
Hoover - Was blamed for all the ills of the Depression, yet still continued to serve his country instead of remaining bitter.
WH Harrison - Reminded everyine to listen to their moms when they are told to put their coats on when it's cold outside.
Second Set:
Adams - Had to directly follow Washington, which was an impossible act to follow.
Ford - Had to keep the nation from collapsing because of the Nixon impeachment. Paid too much for his efforts.
B Harrison - Just when he thought he got rid of Cleveland, he shows up again.

AL - I hate to rank him other than in first (considering that his wife is my wife's 7th great aunt), but his suspension of habeus corpus and allowing Stanton as much power as he had causes me to reconsider.
HH - bad timing and lack of economic knowledge.
