Readers may recall that every so often I like to get a sense of how they rate the Presidents of the United States. This go-round, I am doing something a little different; I randomized the list and then cut them into sets of three. Each day I will ask you about two sets, in each set rank the presidents 1-2-3 within that set. Here are today's sets:
Set One
George Washington
Martin Van Buren
Richard Nixon
Set Two
Franklin Pierce
Lyndon Johnson
Andrew Jackson

This is a fun way to do it. I'll play along
Set One
George Washington
Martin Van Buren
Richard Nixon
gw
rn
Mvb
GW #1 is easy.
RN #2 just because he was an adequate cold warrior so he's ahead of MVB
Mvb #3 Don't know anything about him so he's #3.
Set Two
Franklin Pierce
Lyndon Johnson
Andrew Jackson
AJ #1 just because he HAS to be better than the other two
FP Same as MVB, don't know much about him.
LBJ Arrrgh. One of the worst of all time.

Van Buren (not the worst pre-Civil War president, but not that great)
Set Two:
Jackson
Johnson (Civil Rights legacy)
Pierce (a do-nothing drunk slavery sympathizer whose lack of leadership one reason for Civil War)

Set One easy:
GW
MVB
Set Two Not easy:
FP
LJ
AJ
I'll explain: Andrew Jackson was the first Demagogue Democrat; he developed the spoils system to reward his croonies; he had congress to pass the Force Bill, so SC would nullify tarrifs passed by the national congress. Some say he saved the union from civil war; I say he started the modern Democrat party down the path of corruption, and you would have had the big goverment LBJ if you hadn't had King Andrew!
