Oh my. This is not going well at all. Obama said earlier, and with quite a bit of indignation, that his lipstick on a pig statement was completely unrelated to Sarah Palin, but tonight on David Letterman, he said this:
"Keep in mind, technically, had I meant it this way, [Palin] would be the lipstick. The failed policies of John McCain would be the pig, just following the logic of this illogical situation."
Wah? Why does he keep bringing this up? Between this and Joe Biden saying Hillary would have been a better VP pick over him, I'm beginning to think these two are trying to kill what ever chance they have left to win this election.

Hmmm... anyone know what time Letterman is taped, or did this run live? If I recall, Letterman is taped early in the morning. I'm wondering if Obama's Letterman appearance was taped before he gave his indignant, "this campaign should be about issues," speech this afternoon.

"Why does he keep bringing this up?"
Because he's an idiot. There really is no other reason. No intelligent person would continually bring up something that's been used as a way to attack them, unless they could ultimately and thoroughly refute it. However, Obama didn't do that. If anything, he made it worse. This would be like Bill Clinton constantly bringing up Monica wherever he goes.

I decided to watch Letterman tonite out of "trainwreck" curiosity. The portion of the show that I found most troubling was Barack's story of his first trip to the mainland as a child. He stated that he was more fascinated by a shrunken head display in a museum than he was with Disneyland. My first thought was: 'is that a Kenyan thing?' Does that thought make me a racist?

IMO, that's just about the best way he could blow it off. Don't make a big fuss, don't treat it seriously. I do believe that he was trying to use these colloquial aphorisms, and didn't realize the implication. He seemed to me too focused on keeping that slight Southern accent to notice what he was actually saying.
Which is exactly how the McCain camp should have let Palin handle it. "Oh, I'm pretty sure he didn't mean it that way," she would have said, "And if he did, well, I've gotten called a lot worse. Anyone going against the corruption in their own party is going to get called names." Subtle dig.

Read the wcbstv.com link and it was actually straight, no filter. Well, there is the fact that they never mentioned why the "lipstick on a pig" comment was so obviously a reference (and a churlish one at that) to Gov. Palin. You know, the way she attached herself to the word lipstick -in the context of this election- in an unforgettable way? Listen to the crowd when he said "lipstick on a pig", they were already yucking it up. Or do you believe that the greatest orator and communicator ever, who is intimately aware of the proletariats', er, uh, uh, the peoples', that's it, the peoples needs, was the ONLY ONE IN THE ROOM who didn't make the connection ?
Uh, yeah. And bill ayers is a great American patriot, right.

You guys need to remember - at all times - that The Chosen One has never, ever, never made a mistake. Indeed, nothing he does can possibly *be* a mistake. If he has done something it is good and right and correct and perfect.
Thus things that the ignorant may falsely *perceive* as mistakes must be elaborately explained, the better to correct their prejudice and stupidity.
Sheesh. As if this isn't common knowledge.

Keep digging, Obama. Sounds a bit like the title of a book:
"If I did it"
If he wants to keep on with the lipstick metaphor, consider this; Obama is that cheap lipstick in the bargain bin slathered all over Jimmy Carter's failed policies (the pig) and presented to the public as "new and improved".
Simple fact: Obama has had ample opportunity over the course of years to "change" things. He didn't. In fact, he took advantage of the status quo for the benefit of himself and a select few. He didn't even try. And now we're supposed to believe he will. Why? Because now he really, really means it?

Okay, here's a theory behind Obama's blunders.
He doesn't really want the job.
He knows deep down he's not qualified - and it scares him to death... but as a political adrenaline junkie he's got to fight the good fight. He's got a LOT of folks with deep, messy pockets backing him up, and I wouldn't be suprised if some of them have told him in no-so-veiled terms that if he FAILS he's going to have something very unfortunate happen to him or his family.
So how do you run for office, wanting to fail, hating the idea of WINNING - but appearing to give your best effort?
You sabotage yourself. You make enough bad choices so the damage is cumulative and badly wounding to your campaign, but nothing you point at individually is a deal breaker.
So you have gaffes. And mis-speakings. You have campaign events that are damaging to your campaign and alienate the non-committed voter, but look REALLY good.
You tell your folks to 'not attack the other side', knowing they're not going to be able to resist the opportunity, driving other uncommitted voters away... and all the time expressing ignorance of what's going on.
Does Obama want to lose? Could it be he realizes the job is WAY above his pay grade? I dunno - but it almost looks that way.
