The Olympic games which opened yesterday in China have been touched by tragedy already.
A knife-wielding Chinese man attacked two relatives of a coach for the U.S. Olympic men's volleyball team at a tourist site in Beijing, killing one and injuring the other on the first day of the Olympics on Saturday, team officials and state media said. The man then committed suicide by throwing himself from the second story of the site, the 13th century Drum Tower just five miles from the main Olympics site. This will likely put a damper on the events for US athletes plus maybe some from other countries. China may like to keep news like this quiet, but I'm sure the Olympic rumor mill or grapevine will prevent the news from spreading among those there to take part in the games. The brutal attack shortly after midday was all the more shocking because of the rarity of violent crime against foreigners in tightly controlled China, which has ramped up security measures even more for the Olympics.
The stabbing came only hours after what by many accounts was the most spectacular opening ceremony in Olympic history and it has already dampened some of the enthusiasm.

I'm very wary that some backers of Al Qaeda will pull off some terrorist event during the games of some sort. On Monday, 16 Chinese police were killed in a terrorist attack that had the fingerprints of Al Qaeda all over it.
Even if these attacks are small, they still have a chilling impact and cast a large shadow of fear.
China has had ongoing problems in a province near the Pakistan and Afghanistan borders with Muslim supporters of the Taliban and Al Qaeda waging a low level terrorist war for decades.

flash--1,500 civilians killed in a single day. 10 Russian jets shot down. Georgia readying for war with Russia. (Seriously, WTF?! Nothing to learn from the Chechen conflict?)
But the sicks dictating content for the 24 hour newstainment cycle clearly have their priorities.

OK, Hyppie and flush, we lose over a hundred folks a day to MVA's, two jumbo jets crashing every week all year long, more than half due to DUI, right here in the USA. So any time you complain about anything I don't want to have to deal with, lets distract and bring that up instead of dealing with the topic at hand.

1900s. Moro* insurgency. Suicide knife attacks. One "random" attack in China doesn't establish a trend or pattern but keep an eye out for a 2nd or 3rd such attack near the Olympics.
