- "The Internet has been operating now for 10 years. The second 10 years will be very different."
Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, speaking about the future in South Korea where he was meeting with President Lee Myung-bak. Overlooking the none-too-revealing prediction of ten years of change in the coming ten years, the more interesting assertion is that the Internet has been operating since 1998 - the year Windows 98 with Internet Explorer built-in was released. Everyone knows Al Gore invented the Internet well before that...

Heh, 1998. Of course Bill Gates would only recognize the internet's existence with the release of Windows 98. Before that, I guess it was some weird corporate or university networking thing that no sane person would ever have any interest in using at home. Of course, he does have a point. My in-laws called Internet Explorer "the Internet" until a year ago when I finally forced them to use Firefox by hiding all shortcuts to IE and making Firefox the default browser.

Bill Gates speaks Korean? Who knew?
Note: The typo is now fixed, but it was there when the piece was first published.

Very funny, Jer, exactly what I was thinking.
Kevin, pull your head out of your ass, please. "Everyone knows Al Gore invented the Internet well before that..." How stupid do you think wizbang readers are?

Max why not grow up and join the rest of the thinking world.....
Just because Barbara at snopes is drinking the kool-aid doesn't mean a thing....
Here's how she created her fantasy:
Claim: Al Gore claimed he "invented" the internet.
She says it is false ... because he didn't say he invented it, he said he "created" it.
Expecting idiots like to to miss the fact that created and invented are the same thing... She's playing word games worthy of the Clinton era....
Well, including you, pretty freaking stupid.

Max, if you'd have bothered to read the links you'd notice one by Vincent Cerf who gave Gore some credit. I specifically included that concluding line because I knew it drives people like you nuts.

Actually, I was working in the software industry during the '80's and '90's, and recall just how much Al Gore had to do with the Internet that I was working on at the time.
And the answer was very little, Barbara Snopes notwithstanding. His contributions were minor issues about funding of and restrictions upon the use of, the backbone links that at that time were funded by DARPA and its successor NSF.
