Rap superstar Nas is taking about his new album, Nigger, with MTV, which earlier in the week earned him some criticism in a Fox News story from Jesse Jackson and the NAACP.
"I'm a street disciple," Nas responded, quoting one of his earlier album titles. "I'm talking to the streets. Stay out of our business. You ain't got no business worrying about what the word 'nigger' is or acting like you know what my album is about without talking to me. Whether you in the NAACP or you Jesse Jackson. I respect all of them ... I just want them to know: Never fall victim to Fox. Never fall victim to the sh-- they do. What they do is try to hurry up and get you on the phone and try to get you to talk about something you might not know about yet.""If Cornell West was making an album called Nigger, they would know he's got something intellectual to say," Nas stated. "To think I'm gonna say something that's not intellectual is calling me a nigger, and to be called a nigger by Jesse Jackson and the NAACP is counterproductive, counter-revolutionary."
"We're taking power from the word," he added. "No disrespect to none of them who were part of the civil-rights movement, but some of my n---as in the streets don't know who [civil-rights activist] Medgar Evers was. I love Medgar Evers, but some of the n---as in the streets don't know Medgar Evers, they know who Nas is. And to my older people who don't now who Nas is and who don't know what a street disciple is, stay outta this mutha----in' conversation. We'll talk to you when we're ready. Right now, we're on a whole new movement. We're taking power from that word."
[T]aking power from that word?
If he means by confusing the hell out of people he might be on to something...

Just another ignorant, moronic rapper who will fade from view and memory soon only to become another footnote in the history of the recording industry. He opens his mouth and ignorance spews forth. Wonderful, just wonderful. Is it any wonder that the majority of current rappers get no respect nor deserve any?

Another immature knucklehead who thinks he's sticking it to the establishment by using naughty words. And people pay money to listen to this crap?

I think he meant to say, "We're taking power from that cash."
And after that is smoked up, snorted up and finally shot up he'll be back on the streets. Or under them after being really shot up.

He actually sounds like he has a point here, and comes off as a bit of a left-of-center intellectual. Do I believe him? Don't know about that.

Why is all I can think of is In Living Color, where they play intellectuals reading rap lyrics in a serious, measured tone?

I think very soon fiction writers will be out of work. Reality, after all, keeps coming up with more unbelievable stuff.

Eh, he manages to be right and a complete idiot at the same time. Until you no longer give a shit whether anybody uses the word, you will not have taken the power away from it. Using it yourself has really nothing to do with it. For instance, if some black guy calls me cracker, I'm just gonna laugh. One, because I know he's an idiot, and two, because I just find that word fucking hilarious when used in that context.
