***Bumped and Updated***
I was shocked to hear about Randi Rhodes being attacked on Sunday night. I sincerely hope she will be alright. She must have been terrified. But I was equally shocked when I read that her co-host, Jon Elliot insinuated that the "right wing hate machine" was behind it. What an irresponsible, unfounded, and, not to mention, completely paranoid thing to say:
Elliott was extremely agitated when he reported on the incident. He opened his show by saying "it is with sadness that tonight I inform you that my Air America colleague Randi Rhodes was assaulted last night while walking her dog near her New York City home."Pointing out that Rhodes was wearing a jogging suit and displayed no purse or jewelry, Elliott speculated that "this does not appear to me to be a standard grab the money and run mugging."
"Is this an attempt by the right wing hate machine to silence one of our own," he asked. "Are we threatening them. Are they afraid that we're winning. Are they trying to silence intimidate us."
One the one hand, it infuriates and offends me that he would automatically assume that it was a right winger who did this. There are all sorts of crazy types in New York City who have attacked innocent people unprovoked. On the other hand, I feel sorry for him and others on the left who live their lives in fear that some made up, figment of their imagination "right wing hate machine" is out there lurking in the shadows waiting to "silence" them.
Bithead at Bitsblog agrees with me that the whole idea that the "right wing hate machine" was behind Randi's attack is, well, ridiculous. And, I know, I know, I shouldn't be so shocked that some on the left would say that the right was responsible for it, but I just can't help it. The accusation that some kind of clandestine, organized "right wing hate machine" plotted to "silence" Randi is so paranoid that it borders on psychotic.
Update: Well, it turns out that Randi Rhodes was not mugged. She fell while walking her dog:
Air America radio host Randi Rhodes is temporarily off the air, but claims she was brutally attacked near her Manhattan apartment are bogus, her lawyer and a police source said today.Fellow host Jon Elliott claimed on the liberal radio network that Rhodes had been mugged while walking her dog, Simon, on Sunday night. Elliot, who said Rhodes lost several teeth in the attack, waxed about a possible conspiracy.
"Is this an attempt by the right-wing, hate machine to silence one of our own?" he asked on the air, according to Talking Radio, a blog. "Are we threatening them? Are they afraid that we're winning? Are they trying to silence intimidate us?"
A police source said Rhodes never filed a report and never claimed to be the victim of a mugging. Cops from Manhattan's 17th Precinct called her attorney, who told them Rhodes was not a victim of a crime, the source said.
Rhodes' lawyer told the Daily News she was injured in a fall while walking her dog. He said she's not sure what happened, and only knows that she fell down and is in a lot of pain. The lawyer said Rhodes expects to be back on the air Thursday. He stressed there is no indication she was targeted or that she was the victim of a "hate crime."
I'm glad to hear she wasn't mugged, but Mr. Elliot and the other leftist bloggers and commenters who went completely off the deep end on this non-story need to apologize to conservatives for their irresponsible and offensive accusations that right wingers were behind her non-existent attack. Of course, I won't hold my breath that they will.
Update II: Captain Ed:
1. Air America lies, even when stories involve their own personnel. No one thought to give Randi a call to see how she was doing before Elliot decided to air his report? And no one thought to do so afterwards? The police ended up calling to see why no one reported the incident to them. That's just marvelous journalistic ethics.2. Anyone who thinks that bigotry has no place in the liberal mindset has -- once again -- just received a material lesson to the contrary. Even without knowing anything about the attacker, several bloggers just decided that it had to be a politically motivated assault by a conservative. That's not leaping to conclusions, that's flying at jet speed to Paranoialand.
3. How long do you think it will take for these same bloggers to offer an apology -- one not accompanied by a litany of rationalizations about how mean conservatives are, and how it was impossible not to convict an entire class of people for an imaginary crime? Longer than the next time they trot out an argument for innocent-until-proven-guilty for the detainees at Guantanamo Bay, I'd bet.
Indeed. They have no shame.
Update III: Vodkapundit offers a "correction":
CORRECTION: It has come to our attention that had Rhodes been mugged, the savage act would have been committed by a pack of drooling reactionaries. So while the original story was fake, it remains, and shall remain, accurate. We regret the error.

The first thing that comes to mind upon reading this story is the strange incident where Dan Rather was assaulted.
Most people thought he was full of crap at the time because being attacked by a guy yelling "What is the frequency, Kenneth?!?" was so off the wall that it had to be made up.
It turned out that the guy was a mental patient who was bat-shiat crazy and was convinced that the network news anchors were transmitting to a device contained in his teeth, hence the comments when he attacked.
Somehow, I doubt that right-wing individuals will get an apology from this douchebag if the culprit is caught and determined to be someone apolitical.

But she didn't research anything, made a bunch of crap up about the targets of her harassment, and then refused to consider the possibility that she might have been somewhat innaccurate in her reporting.
No, this ia a label that gets applied to Malkin because she went to their home and harassed them. No request for an interview. No contact with the targets of her harassment. No reporting, checking for facts to back up her innuendo, or anything that even remotely resembles journalism.
Maybe if she had, at the very least, made an attempt to talk to the subject of her smear job before spewing her lies and hatred, there might be the possibility of considering what she did to be reporting. Bad reporting - but still having a vague resemblance to journalism. Instead, her actions were akin to the paparrazzi stalking celebrities. And every bit as reprehensible.

Actions that cause harm are wrong.
The two acts (battery and blogging) are therefore morally equivalent.
Fallacious, but what lefty logic isn't?

It seems that, according to you, if she reports without direct information she's a slandering bitch passing on unsubstantiated rumor or stealing from the MSM. If she goes and does a personal investigation and finds actual facts, like they own and drive specified vehicles, she is harassing people, even if she never speaks to them. No doubt you'd have her in prison for assault had she actually attempted to speak to them.
Do you really think journalism is based on an interview? How lame. How old school. Journalism requires digging through lots of sources, photos, public registries, such as land title, chattel mortgage, corporation, and surveillance, with the personal interview the most useless and least accurate.
As for Malkin's lies, please quote one, but follow the rules. Quote a statement of fact she has made, quote it in context, prove it is false, prove it is intentionally false and not a mere error. To satisfy me you'll also have to prove it was material to whatever point Malkin was trying to make. Then we'll discuss if she ever acknowledged the inaccuracy.
I don't think you'll be able to do that. I think you are wrong. You may be liars, but I can't prove that so I won't say it. I expect you are the usual excited lefties with no command of the facts, or any ability to comprehend the necessity of knowing the facts.

But you knew that, dincha?
Quick algebra question. If your house is worth $400k and you only paid $65K, assuming you put down the required 20%, how much equity do you have in your home? x = $348,000

Tom, you have not yet provided any evidence that Malkin lied about anything. Even your terminology is quite mad and bad. She does not 'spew'. I've watched her. She is quite well spoken.
You do mention that "Malkin rhetorically asks why the Frosts didn't get insurance for their kids". She may have mentioned that in a rhetorical question, but no matter, that is exactly her point, my point, the point of most commenters here and the point of the real reality based community. The Frosts are at fault, 100%, because they did not get insurance when they could have.
If you have a house with lots of equity, 3 vehicles and are capable of working, you arrange your affairs to buy insurance for your kids. And you do it before the accident, before the illness, before the catastrophe.
You make do with an old vehicle or maybe 1 vehicle instead of 3. You sell or refinance the house. You work overtime or get a second job. If you don't, you're an irresponsible jerk.

"So - she contacted the Frosts and requested an interview?"
Yes, she did, they declined.
"She fact checked all of her basless lies?"
You still have yet to produce one lie of Malkin's please, fill us in on just one.
"Like the fact that that $400K house was actually worth $65K, and in a crime ridden neighborhood, when they bought it?"
Actually tom, since you are so interested in the facts, the house was bought for $55k, not $65k.
"Or did she imply that the Frosts spent too much on their house?"
Ummm, no dumbass, she is implying that a family that bought a house for $55k, a house that is now worth $400k, sure as shit has enough equity to afford health insurance! That you don't understand that is not surprising, but certainly pathetic.
"Like the fact that the Frosts were denied insurance coverage for their children because the insurance companies said they had a pre-existing condition?"
Umm tom, THEY DID have a pre-existing condition, because they waited until AFTER the accident to try to buy insurance!! Good god, you can't be THAT stupid!
"Oh, that's right - you forgot to mention that part of the post that you Googled where Malkin rhetorically asks why the Frosts didn't get insurance for their kids."
Once again tom, they tried to get insurance AFTER the accident, so Malkin's question is legitimate AND important, why the hell didn't the Frost's get insurance for their kids BEFORE any kind of accident might have occured?!!
"I wonder why there's no admission of error, followup on the lies she spewed, or consideration of the facts of the situation."
Amazing, I am sure we will see your admission of errors for all of the lies you have spewed. Seriously tom, you are pathetic.

Oh, I certainly admit the Dems do some stupid things. And you folks make sure they take their lumps for it. But when someone on the right says something stupid, you just can't admit it, and have to go dragging up every Harry Reid statement you can find to draw attention away. And then to have the actual US Congress, with all of the issues of the day, spend time on a resolution defending one of the most divisive personalities on the air? As I said, desperate.
Plus, guess what? None of this shit matters anyway. It's a fantasy if you think "millions of people will learn" about Jesse Macbeth, or that anyone will care about this in two weeks, much less regret it.

An apology that he should re-issue on the air, since that is where he made his accusation.
And an "emotional reaction" to somebody getting mugged, is to assume that it is a part of a "right wing hate machine?" Yeah, the first thing I always think of when one on my friends is a victim of a crime is that it most have been perpetrated by some "left wing wacko." I don't think so.

A similar story here from GMU
http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2007/10/018758.php
The President of The George Washington University, Steven Knapp , came out swinging when he thought that conservative students had hung pernicious, anti-Muslim fliers around campus. "There is no place for expressions of hatred .... We do not condone, and we will not tolerate the dissemination of fliers or other documents that vilify any religious, ethnic or racial group," he said in a statement released to the media. The Executive Vice President of the Student Association called the acts "heinous" and said that he "would support expulsion."
...
So far, President Knapp has been less than enthusiastic about taking any type of disciplinary action now that liberals have been revealed to be the culprits. "We have established judicial policies and procedures," University spokeswoman Tracy Schario said. "I am confident that President Knapp will let them take their course."
What about not "condon[ing]" and "tolerat[ing] the dissemination" of hate? All of a sudden the administration is concerned about due process? Yet when the fliers were first spotted, Young America's Foundation students were dragged into an administrator's office, presumed guilty, pressured--unsuccessfully--to sign a statement disavowing hate speech that may originate from any of their future events, and hauled before a University "Peace Forum" where they were jeered at by fellow students.
So much for due process!
I'm sure if Muslims were the intended target of the fliers, President Knapp would've probably announced plans to build a multimillion-dollar mosque on campus, Imams would be hired as visiting professors, prayer rugs would be imported from Saudi Arabia, and the school would institute a new study abroad program to Mecca.
Alas, conservatives were the target, so President Knapp's wrath has subsided, and his clarion call for justice is no more. And that means that the political profiling of conservatives continues for another day.
