Berkely Breathed, the comic genius behind Bloom County and now Opus has notified readers of his Sunday comic that newspapers around the country (including The Washington Post) are pulling his next two strips. From his website:
Note to Opus readers: The Opus strips for August 26 and September 2 have been withheld from publication by a large number of client newspapers across the country, including Opus' host paper The Washington Post.
See the August 26 strip here, then try to explain exactly how that's so controversial that it can't be published...

If the topic of this cartoon were about Christians or Jews you can bet it would be printed and defended on the basis of free speech.

You know, part of me thinks that he knew he would get this reaction and did it for the publicity. Because while I was an avid Bloom County reader growing up, I'm not sure I even knew that he came out of retirement.

My thoughts exactly Tim.
We should know that the only fundamentalist group it's ok to make fun of are the Christians.

Look at the Breathed site. (Google Opus). Last week's comic took a swipe at fundamentalist Christians, specifically Jerry Falwell. As a Christian, I understood the humor and laughed. Too bad believers in that other so called "Great Religion" are unable to laugh at themselves as well.

Any newspaper refusing to print the comic should be banned... (tongue in cheek). But seriously, you should at least cancel and not buy it.

The whacked-out members of our religion only bomb abortion clinics. We don't bomb newspaper offices or cut off peoples' heads, in general. It's totally safe to diss Christians. Liberals are chickenshits at heart anyway.

The sad thing is how quickly all those newspapers, who scream freedom of the press when they're publishing classified information, caved without even being challenged by the ROP.

Liberals are hyper-sensitive to certain things. They think Bush is fighting all muslims, so they stick up for all Muslims in an effort to oppose Bush. It's all part of political correctness working in conjunction with Bush Derangement Syndrome.

Newspapers? What are those?
Didn't they go the way of the dinosaurs?
I'm not surprised. Print media is so leftist these days, I don't bother to read them unless they are free in an airport lounge or hotel. Even then I take what is printed with a grain of salt. So much is BS, not to mention THEY decide what is news in their opinion anyway. Print News = Zero Credibility.
