My pastor studied at Liberty and was a good friend of Falwell's. He was a much maligned man of character who was excoriated for calling pornography a sin. I will disregard those who, in their willful ignorance, think they have anything of substance to say about him without knowing him. While he may have said a few politically stupid things, the only "damage" he did was to people's self-esteem because they couldn't stand being told they were wrong. He will rest in peace.

Jerry Falwell was a man of good moral character and a man of God who never fell to the sins of greed and lust, unlike so many other religious celebrities. From Jay's piece on Molly Ivins death:
Can't agree with you, Jay. I was force-fed her crap when the Lawrence Eagle-Tribune regularly soiled their editorial pages with her vomit a few years back. She was a bitter, rancid, one-dimensional hack who thought calling Dubya "Shrub" qualified her for seating at the Algonquin Round Table. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Good assessment, cmd, but you left out 'partisan'. Molly Ivins was a true yellow-dog Democrat who really would have voted for the Devil himself if he were running on the Democratic ticket. One could simply summarize her philosophy and writing as "Republican - bad; Democrat - good".
She may be missed by others, but not by me. Surely one can find others more worthy to mourn.

Yes. As a matter of fact, I do indeed.
"[I]f there is retributive justice [Sen. Jesse Helms] will get AIDS from a transfusion, or one of his grandchildren will get it." -PBS's Nina Totenberg
"I hope his wife feeds him lots of eggs and butter and he dies early like many black men do, of heart disease." - USA Today's Julianne Malveaux regarding fellow black Clarence Thomas.
"...some sleazy woman with big hair coming out of the trailer parks ..." -Newsweek's Evan Thomas about Paula Jones, one of the many women victimized by Bill Clinton.
Remember when former NBC Radio reporter Bonnie Erbe told Linda Chavez that she had a greater chance of being struck by lightning than being raped "at her age."?
Other examples of liberal vitriol include Eleanor Clift's remarks about the impeachment of her venerated William Jefferson Clinton: "That herd of managers from the House, I mean, frankly, all they were missing was white sheets."
Along the same lines, the Arkansas Times wrote that "Kenneth Starr is cunning, ruthless, and about as well mannered as Heinrich Himmler." Then there was Los Angeles Times' Karen Grigsby Bates, who said of Sen. Trent Lott: "Whenever I hear Trent Lott speak, I immediately think of nooses decorating trees. Big trees, with black bodies swinging from the business ends of nooses." Of course, she may have had Lott mixed up with the senior United States Senator from West Virginia, member of the Democratic Party, and Exalted Cyclops.
Liberals can hear whispers of what they consider hate speech fifty miles away - whether they imagine that it's coming from Sean Hannity or Jerry Falwell or just about anyone opposed to affirmative action. But, they can't hear it dripping off their own nasty tongues. Hypocrisy, thy name is liberal.

I sat here with tears rolling down my face when I tried to read a thread on FARK on which mostly Liberals ranted obscenities and threats and various quotes from the possessed from THE EXORCIST at the pretend-presence of Jerry Falwell lying dead.
Number One task is prayer for lost souls. And as to that, I know that Falwell gave it a very good effort. Faith is rewarded in Heaven by God, not popularity on Earth.

There is a huge difference in CURSING SOMEONE TO DEATH OR IN DEATH and another thing to withhold support for what they did while alive on Earth. A huge, huge difference.
What I've read as to Falwell from the Left condemns the Left, it does nothing to harm Falwell. The depth of my sadness when I read this hate from the Left is that I know that it's coming from the depths of others who are immersed in darkness. No one of faith could or would ever write what I've read the Left has written about Falwell, here, elsewhere this morning.
Molly Ivins wasn't someone whose work was well supported outside her Liberal audience. Her work. No one among the Right, among Conservatives, has stood over her grave and spat upon it, nor upon her soul, as the Left has done as to Falwell.

None of us knows when our time comes but once it arrives, we go before God and there's no moment for revision or rewrite by then.
Falwell's mostly Bible-centered statements made him one to revile by many Liberals but Falwell focused on what God's word says. If you don't like the message, hating the messenger won't change the outcome. Nor the penalty at judgement.

Falwell blames 'pagans, abortionists, gays, feminists, lesbians' for death
(ANS, The Afterlife) Echoing his comments made after 9-11 that the terrorist attack was caused by a litany of "evil forces," the late Jerry Falwell said today from the afterlife that "pagans, abortionists, gays, feminists, lesbians, the ACLU, People for the American Way, Al Gore, Daily Kos and other immoral, liberal groups and individuals bear full responsibility for the heart attack that has claimed my earthly life."
Falwell went to add that, unlike his apology following his post-9-11 comments, he will "not be apologizing this time because there are no liberals where I'm going. So they can kiss my fat, dead ass."

Pretty sure Flynt did not say that. Here's his statement:
"The Reverend Jerry Falwell and I were arch enemies for fifteen years. We became involved in a lawsuit concerning First Amendment rights and Hustler magazine. Without question, this was my most important battle - the l988 Hustler Magazine, Inc., v. Jerry Falwell case, where after millions of dollars and much deliberation, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in my favor.
My mother always told me that no matter how much you dislike a person, when you meet them face to face you will find characteristics about them that you like. Jerry Falwell was a perfect example of that. I hated everything he stood for, but after meeting him in person, years after the trial, Jerry Falwell and I became good friends. He would visit me in California and we would debate together on college campuses. I always appreciated his sincerity even though I knew what he was selling and he knew what I was selling.
The most important result of our relationship was the landmark decision from the Supreme Court that made parody protected speech, and the fact that much of what we see on television and hear on the radio today is a direct result of my having won that now famous case which Falwell played such an important role in."

I'm not referring to his Biblical teachings on homosexuality. Rather I am referring to the war he raged against homosexuals in American culture.
There are plenty of sins (adultery and greed chief among them) that have torn American society apart at a far deeper level than homosexuality. Yet Falwell never went on moralistic campaigns to rid American courts of no-fault divorce, or declare that all those who had gotten no-fault divorces were sinners destined for hell (which is actually what some hardcore biblical primitivists teach). I also never saw Falwell publicly denounce the architects of the massive financial swindles of the Dot Com era. Their greed ruined far more lives than Ellen Degeneres ever will.
Falwell's crusade against homosexuality was a misguided (though sincere) campaign that turned the attention of evangelical christians away from issues that should have been at the center of their movement.

I'd like to see your proof that Jerry Falwell said and believed this.
The bible is quite clear that God has a plan for the Jews. They are still His people-that has not changed. Romans spells some it out very clearly. Some is still a mystery (something God knows and plans that has not been revealed to us yet.). I don't know of any Christians that hold Jews in contempt or think they all are going to hell. (Oh, I'm sure that are a very, very few-but they are not in the mainstream.)
Just a hint-when you try to use the bible to back up something you say, or to put down someone else all you do is display your ignorance about God and Christianity.

for the record- Fred Phelps and RABID-liberals are human waste products that should just be removed...period
As far as rabid left jerking themselves into a frenzy, I totally understand it. It doesn't bother me because I cannot think any lower of liberals than I already do.
I despise Rosie, Mikey Moore, Teddy Kennedy, etc. It's just how LOW and LOUD the comments will go.
We know the opposite ends of the ideological spectrum are for lack of a better word at (WAR).
Most of you who are more moderate or middle in your ideologies prefer a more civil tone.

You really are an absurdly stupid little twit, thinking you're so clever w/ your "gems." Your contempt for Comey just reflects that you could care less about a functioning DoJ so long as it carries out a one-sided application of law on behalf of Republicans and call it "Justice.".
According to your "standards," god help anyone who actually thought Justice should be blind rather than administered by a gaggle of self-serving cronies.
Bush and Gonzo the Goofus have turned DoJ into a mockery of Justice. Even Ashcroft, who I never agreed with, at least had a concept of Justice as non-political.

Further, in Bush's lame duck days, he, Gonzo the Goofus and Rove have overturned any semblance of "fair enforcement" of the law, now that they are safely out of reach of any corrective voter response.
