It's apparently in a pretty large area. I have a friend who lives and works in Manhattan and says it's pretty strong where she is. So far Con Ed says they don't have a leak in their system. We're waiting on a news conference. If anything happens I will post it.
Update: Mayor Bloomberg is conducting his news conference. He said there was a small leak at Bleecker and 6th streets but not big enough to explain the size of the smell. What everyone is smelling is mercaptan, which is the chemical added to natural gas to give it an odor so it can be detected. Everything that was off line is now on line again.

Sounds like someone accidentally poured out a couple of gallons of one of the mercaptan compounds.
It doesn't take much of the stuff (one drop per million cubic feet of natural gas, for example).
